    Amber inclusions - Chiapas, Mexico

    I recently aquired some amber inclusion specimens from Chiapas, Mexico. Im interested if there is any good litterature or website that is recommended for identifying the different species? All help is welcomed!

    Chiapas Amber Simojovel, Chiapas, Mexico La Quinta Fm./Mazantic Shale (Simojovel Group) 22.8-15 Ma Specimen (Rough): Weight: 11.8g Dimensions: 33x31x17mm Lighting: 140lm LED Longwave UV (365nm) About the Specimen: A thick, red oxidized layer was formed over millions of years through oxidation during the amber's burial. The blue-green fluorescence is due to exposure of the amber's hydrocarbons to UV wavelengths in the LED light. There are numerous fossil barnacles and barnacle scars, coating the exterior of the specimen. History: The amber of Chiapas has a history of use that dates back to the age of the Maya Empire; amber was traded between different tribes, and sometimes sent as an annual tribute to other nations (i.e., Aztec Empire). It was frequently fashioned into ornaments and jewelry such as necklaces, as well as lip, nose, and ear plugs; living descendants of the Mayan civilization carry on this ancient tradition, and skilled artisans fashion amber into similar jewelry, and sculptures of intricate detail. Botanical Source: Through Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, as well as the presence of fossil leaves and flowers, the source trees of Chiapas amber have been identified as two extinct species belonging to the Hymenaea genus (Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae): H. mexicana and H. allendis; both trees are related to H. protera, which produced Dominican amber. The closest living relative of these three extinct genera is H. verrucosa, which is native to East Africa. Geology of Deposits: The Sierra Madre del Sur contains three amber-bearing Formations, beginning at the youngest: Balumtun Sandstone, Mazantic Shale, and La Quinta Fm.; amber is most frequently found in the Mazantic Shale and La Quinta Formations, and is associated with layers of lignite, and found in calcareous marine sandstones, siltstones, and shales. Amber specimens up to 60cm long are known to occur at the Campo La Granja mines. Numerous flow lines are seen in a radiating "Y" pattern on the bottom-left section of the specimen: the spaces between the lines represent individual resin layers that were produced in succession by the tree.     Chiapas Amber Simojovel, Chiapas, Mexico La Quinta Fm./Mazantic Shale (Simojovel Group) 22.8-15 Ma Specimen (Rough): Weight: 11.8g Dimensions: 33x31x17mm Lighting: Longwave UV (365nm) About the Specimen: There are numerous fossil barnacles and barnacle scars, coating the exterior of the specimen. History: The amber of Chiapas has a history of use that dates back to the age of the Maya Empire; amber was traded between different tribes, and sometimes sent as an annual tribute to other nations (i.e., Aztec Empire). It was frequently fashioned into ornaments and jewelry such as necklaces, as well as lip, nose, and ear plugs; living descendants of the Mayan civilization carry on this ancient tradition, and skilled artisans fashion amber into similar jewelry, and sculptures of intricate detail. Botanical Source: Through Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, as well as the presence of fossil leaves and flowers, the source trees of Chiapas amber have been identified as two extinct species belonging to the Hymenaea genus (Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae): H. mexicana and H. allendis; both trees are related to H. protera, which produced Dominican amber. The closest living relative of these three extinct genera is H. verrucosa, which is native to East Africa. Geology of Deposits: The Sierra Madre del Sur contains three amber-bearing Formations, beginning at the youngest: Balumtun Sandstone, Mazantic Shale, and La Quinta Fm.; amber is most frequently found in the Mazantic Shale and La Quinta Formations, and is associated with layers of lignite, and found in calcareous marine sandstones, siltstones, and shales. Amber specimens up to 60cm long are known to occur at the Campo La Granja mines. Hello, I'm thinking of adding some Dominican amber and Mexican Chiapas amber to my collection, but as always authenticity is a concern especially when buying online so I wanted to get some feedback as best as I could. Here's what I'm looking at: 1. Mexican Chiapas Amber with leaf. Seller has provided image under UV/black light so likely real? Also shipping directly from Mexico and the seller has a bunch of other authentic-looking ones. 2. Dominican amber with Ponerine winged ant and flies, 1.4 cm wide. I asked for photos under UV light and seller didn't provide any but instead said this is not a reliable test so I'm a bit concerned. Specimen itself also looks almost too clear/clean, though I'm aware Dominican amber is generally much clearer than other ambers. What do people think? Thanks.

    Specimen Repair?

    I was wondering if someone could advise me on whether or not I should repair this piece of Chiapas amber I recently acquired (it's a clean break with only a few small slivers missing; the specimen is exceptionally clear, and has no internal fractures); it was damaged during shipping, and I've been debating whether or not to repair it. What effect might a repair have on it's value, and would it be more acceptable to keep it as two separate pieces? I know the repair of fossil specimens is a generally acceptable practice, but I'm uncertain if this applies to amber (I'm guessing not, as amber considered more of a gem material). I occasionally repair amber damaged during the cleaning and lapidary process using epoxy resin, but I was reluctant to do this to such a decently-sized and costly specimen of Chiapas material without having sought further advice. Thank you!

    Lizards in Amber

    Bugs are cool, but lizards are cooler. Apologies to any resident entomologists. Here are some new vertebrates in my amber collection: - Chiapas amber from Mexico: 4cm lizard hips & tail on top of a nearly complete leaf (17-25myo) - Burmite amber: fat lizard tail (99myo) – is this a gecko? As a kid I had house geckos as pets and their tails were pretty similar. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford the whole lizard.
  16. Hey all, I was just wondering if there has ever been a study comparing fossils of the organisms trapped in amber to similarly located/aged "conventional" rock fossils. It would certainly be interesting to see how the organisms compare between the two forms of preservation- one as a flattened impression and the other looking like it was just alive yesterday.
