BUTVAR B-72 - Is it the same as PARALOID B-72 & BUTVAR B-76?
kenoakee posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Its been a minute since I've posted About 20 years ago while doing research online for fossil preservation I read somewhere that curators used "B-72" as adhesive and consolidate. so I did some digging and found a supplier that offered up free samples. I ordered some and after it arrived we were moving and it was packed away. the next couple of places I lived didn't afford me the space to do my hobbies and prep my fossils. Much time has passed and I am now able to haul out some of those fossils and work on them. I dug out the "B-72" I had ordered years before and started to look up info on how to properly mix my "B-72". Low and behold I didn't realize that there are other products that use the same handle "B-72". I now see its "Paraloid B-72" or "Butvar B-76" that are most commonly used for this purpose. So what's the difference?, and can this "Butvar B-72" be used? Is there or could there be any negative or undesirable effects from this stuff? will it ruin my fossils? If it can be used, does one dilute it the same as the other products? what W/V % should be mixed for consolidating vs using as an adhesive? Thanks for any input -
Which is the proper method of calculating the ratio of consolidant solution? Should you use a volume ratio or mass? My question comes from trying to label my solutions. Both my paraloid and my butvar were mixed in acetone to the same level of "tacky-ness" with 2 tablespoons of media per 1 cup of acetone. If I treat them as volume measurements I get a consolidant percentage of 12% for both. If I use grams of consolidant to grams of acetone I get 3.6% for butvar and 8% for the paraloid.

So my daughter found some shells she is quite proud of finding (she is 7) and wanted me to "clean them" so I scraped most of the surface shale off the shells and exposed as much as I feel I can with simple blades and dental tools (just kinda learning how to do it) but this dark shale is fairly soft and I'm unsure what to do to make it less so? I was reading on here something like the b-72 or 76 to consolidate the fossil would that be the best thing to firm up this shale? And final question if a consolidation is needed where do you get that stuff in canada?

I recently purchased this Alethopteris sp. at a local fossil show. It is typical of shale found in St. Clair Pennsylvania being beautiful, but also very fragile. It’s my first plant fossil that isn’t petrified wood so I’m very excited about it! My question to all you experienced preppers out there is... Should I consolidate it? It has the characteristic layering associated with shale, which tend to split and come apart easily. I don’t plan on the piece being handled much, if at all, but don’t want it falling to pieces in a few years as it sits in my display case. If best practice is to consolidate, what consolidant would you recommend?

Ok, have large block (about 90 cm wide and 12 cm thick) covered in Metasequoia leaves and carbonized wood that due to being partially wet when I recovered it I used white glue to lock the carbon in place. My question is, now that's its totally dried out, can I put Vinac over that to help with the whole block, add more glue, remove glue (if possible?) then do Vinac, or just leave it be? I doubt there is a perfect solution but with the knowledge here maybe there is a usable answer Thanks, Steve

Ok I have a question a friend of mine has given me some vanadinite (spelling?) Some on black barite and some on white however when wrapping them to take home they seem very fragile is there any thing to stabilise them? Obviously for fossils it's paraloid72 thanks for the information and help in advance. Matt

I put this under q and a but feel free to move it. I'm going to be consolidating a few bones very soon and I have some questions before I start. First, my solvent. I have butvar, but I don't have acetone. What dilution should I get, or should I get 100%? Also a experienced fossil hunter I met said alcohol (isopropyl I assume?) works as well. Is this true and are there any downsides to this? One of the bones is broken, so do I consolidate first and then glue? If I come up with more questions I'll post them here as well. Thanks for the help!
