This was found near Douglas Pass In Colorado. The imprint is just under 3 inches point to point. I am having a hard time figuring this one out. The shale is from the same formation as Florissant Colorado from what I understand,

Went up to Douglas Pass, Colorado today for a hike with my wife. I have always hunted for fossils at the Radar Dome location. Today we decided to scout around for another location to collect. Hiked up a very steep hill to a shale exposure and found this larvae after only 1 minute of looking. We had not come prepared today to collect anything. Will probably head back up next weekend. The larvae is approx 2.25 cm across. There are also some parts of other larvae on the piece.

Fossils found at Douglas Pass, Colorado this weekend. Seed?, Unidentified leaves. Shells. (Elimia tenera and unidentified clam). Plant fossils were found near the Radar Dome. The shells were found at a much lower level.

During what I like to call the fossil hunting off-season for folks up in New England you sometimes manage to find something sitting beneath your nose ever since you first found the piece. (i.e. a tooth or shell you missed in a conglomerate or an odd little vertebra you forgot you found at a microsite etc.) This is a similar case where it was only today that I found this tiny insect in some of the material I brought home this summer from Douglas Pass, Colorado (Green River fm. parachute creek member). I hadn't noticed the front of the body and legs until a few hours ago when re-examining the leaves and bugs specimens I picked up from the locality. After carefully picking away at the somewhat flaky matrix the rest of the body was revealed. I want to know what you think its identity is, my guess is mosquito or potentially mayfly. Thoughts? The length is about 3 mm from head to abdomen.

Due to deeply discounted air travel , my wife and I decided to take a spur of the moment vacation to Colorado, a state I have never been to. We will plan on visiting Florissant and Douglas Pass for sure . I am open for other suggested fossil or mineral sites off the beaten path or special photographic spots that would be worth checking out. We will travel from Florissant to Grand Junction via Rt 24 and Rt 50. From there, we will loop back to Winter Park via I 70 and Rt 131. It is a 5 day trip so a little deviation from this itinerary is possible. Any suggestion will be truly appreciated and will help to make a wonderful vacation that I can share with TFF. Mike

I'm planning a trip out west and through my research of the green river formation fossil site at Douglas Pass, CO I've found that there is a no trespassing sign on the gate which you must pass to reach the fossil hunting area. I would appreciate if anyone with experience at the site could shed some light on this because the last thing I want to do is trespass and collect fossils in an area where the latter is prohibited. I'm wondering if the no trespassing sign pertains only to the area surrounding the radar dome. I would be disappointed to find out that the site is off limits and the various posts I've read are either special access or through illegal means. Thanks, PN

I have another Douglas Pass mystery. I kept all the pieces that I could find not knowing what it was. I am really confused as this does not look like plant material to me. It almost looks scaly like a fish or lizard, but I can't really identify any parts that would lead me in any direction that would really suggest that . Interested in any info or speculation. Thanks Oh. And this as about 6" long

Need help identifying this fossil. Green River formation. Parachute Creek member. Douglas Pass, Colorado. Radar Dome location. The specimen is 5/8" across. This is the best I can do for a photograph until I can get a macro lens. (or learn how to take better photos) I have tried many different settings and lighting, but I can't seem to get a better photo. Thank you for your help.

Flower Green River Formation, Parachute Creek Member Douglas Pass, Colorado. Radar Dome area. Denver Museum of Nature and Science. When I first saw this flower, I walked right past it thinking it was a dead flower laying on the rock. I'm glad something in my head made me go back and take another look. I realized that this specimen was rare and asked the Denver Museum if they were interested in it. They were, and the donation was made.

Douglas Pass & Florissant Quarry Fossils - Cleaning & Preparation

I am relatively new to fossil hunting and most of my collection is from the coast of South Carolina. I do have some gorgeous fossils that we found last summer from the Douglas Pass area and the Florissant Quarry in Colorado. I finally had time to get them out of storage, organize and label them but am not sure if there is anything I should do as far as cleaning or preparing them so they don't deteriorate? These are a few of my favorites - the spider, flower and grasshopper(?) were magnified. Also, if anyone has specific thoughts on identifying any of them, I would love to hear what you think. Thanks in advance for any help!
