I've had a few e-mails and PMs, so thanks for those everybody, but just a message here to let you all know the latest. Last night, a little after 11 pm, the sofa started jiggling about, so I asked wifey if she was bouncing around and she asked me the same thing. Then we noticed that the pictures on the walls were flapping about and there were ripples in the coffee. We knew what was happening and after a couple of minutes, it stopped. Fes has been spared as we are a considerable distance from the epicentre, though places further south and west have been badly hit. I've spent today confirming that the people I know down there are okay and, thankfully, they are. wifey and I went and gave blood, there's not much else we can do. Thousands are dead, injured and missing down there. It was completely unexpected and terribly sad.

What geological event could have created this environment ?
ScottInTexas posted a topic in Questions & Answers
There is a stretch of super rocky embankment on our local Army Corps of Engineers built lake that has thousands of common marine fossils and slip rock fossils where these bolder configurations lay. My question is - A few of the huge boulders are blackened as if they had been exposed to fires while some that are planted nearby are white as can be so I am curious as to what could have caused this type of situation. Seems to me that a huge forest fire would have scorched the stones right next to the darker ones but it's not like that at all. The bank is littered with these huge boulders and are mixed charred blackened and snow white stone as noted in the attached pictures. I added a picture of the bank looking toward the water for further reference. The bank stretches just over a mile. I made the uneducated assumption that it was somehow related to the earthquake that occurred at the spot evidenced by the slip rock fossils that are littered all over the place that I am showing with the photo set but otherwise I have absolutely no clue.- 14 replies

It s been a while since Ive been on the site, Life interupted our family fossiling adventures for a while. Our daugther, who pretty much leads our fossil and rock hound adventures has gone off to college to become a paleontogist. She was home for the holidays and we had the chance to visit Eureka CA, Samoa Point shortly after the 6.2 earthquake on December 20th. We have noticed in past visits that shortly after quakes large number of fossilized sand dollars appear on the beaches of Somaoa. this is the result of less than half an hour of walking the beach on a rainy sunday afternoon. Hope you enjoy our finds and hope to post more often in the future Itst

The Long-Lost Tale of an 18th-Century Tsunami, as Told by Trees
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Fossil News
The Long-Lost Tale of an 18th-Century Tsunami, as Told by Trees Local evidence of the cataclysm has literally washed away over the years. But Oregon’s Douglas firs may have recorded clues deep in their tree rings. Max G. Levy, Wired Magazine, September 29, 2021 the paper is: Dziak, R. P., Black, B. A., Wei, Y., and Merle, S. G., 2021, Assessing local impacts of the 1700 CE Cascadia earthquake and tsunami using tree-ring growth histories: a case study in South Beach, Oregon, USA, Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci., 21, 1971-1982. Related paper is; Patton, J. R., Goldfinger, C., Morey, A. E., Romsos, C., Black, B., Djadjadihardja, Y., and Udrekh: Seismoturbidite record as preserved at core sites at the Cascadia and Sumatra-Andaman subduction zones, Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci., 13, 833-867. Yours, Paul H.-

I’ve been busy with work the last few days and have been catching up on the news this morning. Just realized that California got hit with 2 big earthquakes in as many days, and it may not be over yet! I know we have some forum members that live out that way. Everyone ok?
