Hello, I am trying to get into contact with forum member @dshamilla regarding some fossils in his collection, does anyone know his whereabouts? It seems he has not been active since 2018, and I cannot reach him via PM. In my search I came across this obituary: https://chestertontribune.com/previous-articles/Obituaries 2018/david_stephen_hamilla_age_70_pas.htm Which has me wondering if this is the same person and he has passed away? If so, does anyone know of a way I can get into contact with his family, or someone who has access to his collection? Thanks.

Alright everyone, let's hear the reason behind the screen name you chose. Surely there has to be some good ones. I will start with mine "sixgill pete" So, those of you who know me, at least digitally if not personally know my name is Don, not "pete". My favorite teeth have always been cowshark teeth, especially the Hexanchus or sixgill cow shark. One day about 18 years ago I was at some piles of material from the Lee Creek mine (Aurora) on private property with my grandson Nick. Normally in the piles if you find a cowshark, it is Notorhynchus (sevengill). Well, that day I had found 2 sevengills already when I came across a decent sixgill tooth Hexanchus gigas. My first sixgill. Root was not complete, but a decent tooth. I looked at my grandson and said I got one a sixgill tooth and his reply was "Papa for now on I'm going to call you sixgill pete when we are fossil hunting. So it kinda stuck. And, he still does at times today, at 24. So what is your story?

This past weekend I attended the Florida Paleontological Society's spring field trip to a shell pit in Charlotte County, Florida. These trips along with others I take, give me the opportunity to catch up with friends, many who are Fossil Forum members. This got me thinking about a topic for pictures of FF members in the field. From this past week @Shellseeker collecting 1.8 million year old fossil shells from the Caloosahatchee Formation in South Florida.

Hello all! I really hope it’s okay I post this here! It’s positive- I promise! I want to just pour my heart out about the past decade since I began my journey here in Texas. I have this forum to thank for the past year, I just want to drop a super kind thank you to anyone who has ever helped me with any fossil related thing. I’ve been through a lot, but you guys have really helped me in more ways than you know. I lost my way for about a decade because life gave me a really hard dealt hand (more like several slaps) to where I (almost) gave up until about a year ago. I’ve finally come out of my shell and am open to talk about things. Read the deets if you’d like its super not required: Ive been in a shell the past decade. I don’t know exactly when… I just started coming back here more during the pandemic and seeing all of your guys’s posts helped me regain myself more and more. I can’t thank you guys enough. It gives me hope not just in paleontology still being possible but also in finding friendship. I hope I dont sound annoying but I legit cant wait to meet you guys here in Texas out there in the field either by accident or any meetups I can attend. I also want to travel to Alberta, Canada and Dorset,England soon and Ive already saved up for one of those goals. I want to remember again and I want to learn more about the Earth and the wonderful creatures that live/lived in the seas. I also just want to find local friends who will accept me for who I am. I have new heros now my own age that are out there doing amazing and awesome things for science and it feels good to watch people’s journeys and adventures in this field- I’m dying to meet them someday. I also just love seeing people here showing off their fossil finds. Recently, someone here posted a comment to someone else on social media about how they “believe anyone can do anything if their heart is really set on a dream” (or something relevant) and that just set my inner flame in a full blaze. They weren’t speaking to me but it struck a chord because it just rang with so much truth and confidence in what they said. I really cant wait to contribute to the science in SOME way someday either as a professional or an amateur. I have a new quiet job at a bakery for now with competitive pay to save up for some travel dreams, but I hope to do volunteer work at a museum or out in the field someday so I can get hands-on experience learning about local prehistoric life. In the meantime, Im going to learn what I can and get out there outdoors again looking for fossils, enjoying nature, regaining a piece of my old self every time I do. Every time I find something it’s a very intimate feeling with the fossil animal that can’t be put into words- it’s dead but there’s still “life” to it with a story to tell and I can feel it. I also got a microscope and lovin’ the micro fossils! Just maybe I can find something significant too out here as an amateur for now that I can donate to the Heard that would be worthy enough to display! (My long term goal) I live so close to the Heard and go there often all I want to do is fill it with more prehistoric treasures to keep safe for scientific importance and to inspire more people to understand the Earth had some amazing history and amazing creatures. I love being here again. I hope this post wasn’t “too much” but thank you to all who read this far. To come out of my shell more, I uploaded a profile picture of myself! My newest ammonite find. No more hiding behind art vectors. No hair color, no makeup- just me. The only shell I bear now are ammonites… or seashells. Also my name is actually Larí (lah-ree) if you ever see me the DFW area please just say hello to me. Knowing there’s more people out in person interested in prehistoric life would bring me joy. I don’t want to give up on my Texas dreams. -Ammonite Delight aka paleopastels aka Larí Thank you guys reading today for making me smile and thank you for inspiring me.

Hello, I just joined, so here's a little introduction. I'm 46 years of age, live in the Netherlands and been interested in fossils since I was very young. I found my first fossil when I was 2 years old, although it wasn't until I was about 8 or so until I knew what it was. I've not been actively fossil hunting for the last 20 years or so, but I've build up quite a nice collection of finds mostly from the Netherlands, UK and Germany. Currently I don't have the opportunity to go fossil hunting, as I have too many responsibilities to allow me to do so. But I still have quite a bit of unprepared fossils hiding in my shed, so most of my fossil hunting will be in my shed, prepping away at the fossils that have been waiting to be revealed since they were collected. I've made a tiny prep shop in the attic of my shed, so I'll be spending some hours there when time permits. Maybe when my daughter is older, I can convince her to go along on fossil hunting trips. Below a photo of me in one of the now closed quarries in the Netherlands when I was about 10 years old (on the right).

I think it was in the late 90's that Yahoo started Yahoogroups. People created groups/forums for all kinds of hobbies and interests. You couldn't attach photos to posts but you go to the site and post photos when you signed in to Yahoo. There was a fossil collecting group that had included some Fossil Forum members like fossilselachian, Angus Stydens, and myself. I think I called myself something else back then. Anyway, over time, there was less and less activity and then the Fossil Forum started around 2007 and became the main site for people to talk about fossils. Yahoogroups were still active, but about a year ago, Yahoo announced it was shutting down all the groups which was bad because people had posted all kinds of stuff (important and less so) that existed nowhere else online. A birdwatching group was concerned about losing everything, as I recall. The groups were shut down in January. The fossil group was fun in its time.

On Sept. 23 2010 a basically novice fossil collector was looking online trying to I.D. some shark teeth from Lee Creek. While he had been "collecting" for more than a decade it was not a truly serious hobby. While surfing the web he stumbled upon this fledgling thing called the fossil forum. Something told this guy to go ahead and become a member. When asked for a screen name, even though his name was Don he decided on sixgill pete. That was because one of his grandsons had called him that on a hunt. Well the rest is history. 10 years later to the day, he is still a member. Still learning, but now way to serious about these things we call fossils. I have met a lot of great people because of our forum, and unfortunately have lost a few of the great ones too. So I say, thanks to everyone for having me and putting up with me for these 10 years.

In July of last year snolly reached the milestone of 700 "informative" designations applied to snollyposts. As of tonight, the mark of 1500 has been surpassed!!!! So, Whoo Hoo! snolly in an uncharacteristic state of seriousness, avers; this is a great place to be. Thanks for all the fun and information.

Hello everyone! I'm sorry for the late reply in posting this, but I was busy on the weekend with a course I'm taking, so it took me a few days to get my act together. On Friday, October 12th, 2018, a bunch of TFF members met up at Penn Dixie Fossil Park in Hamburg, New York in order to do some group fossil-hunting for mid-Devonian trilobites and other critters. The members in the pictures that follow are Malcolm @Malcolmt (he's wearing the beige bucket hat), Greg @Greg.Wood (he's in the striped shirt), Ken @digit (he's in the red jacket), Ken's wife Tammy (she's in the blue jacket), my daughter Viola (she's the only child in the group, so she's easy to spot!), Kane @Kane (he's in the black shirt), Kane's partner Deb (she's in the black jacket), and Mike @ischua (he's in the blue touque and green jacket). Diane @Mediospirifer and her husband were there, but I didn't get any pictures with them - so sorry! - perhaps Ken got a few photos... I encourage the others members of the group to add pictures to this thread if they have any, especially pictures of the finds - thanks! Monica The group hard at work: Malcolm using one of his toys to clear off some dust and debris: Greg doing some heavy lifting: Malcolm splitting some rock: continued...

This Sunday, August 5th I am planning a forum trip to GMR in Greenville North Carolina. Any and all members are welcome. Of course, with all the recent rain, this is weather contingent. Hopefully the rain will be minimal the next few days as forecast. If so the water should be at a collectible level by Sunday. This is being done in honor of esteemed member digit(Ken) who is currently visiting our amazingly lovely state. As of right now, the plan is to meet at 9 am. Most likely at Greensprings Park on 5th Street. If you are interested in going, please add to this thread so I can make sure I contact everyone Saturday with final plans.

By clicking the informative button in identification threads does one only indicate "That's a fact" or can it also be used to say "Interesting, I didn't know that" ?
