Interesting way of displaying an oreodont.
fossilhunter21 posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hi, everyone. Just thought I would share with everyone this thing I just made to display my oreodont skull nicer. I had been thinking of ways that I could do it, and decided this would work the best for me. To make the insert, I had to put saran wrap around both halves of the skull. Then, using apoxie sculpt, I sculpted the insert to the the shape of the skull. This took a lot of patience, and a lot of time... I was worried I wouldn't be able to get it done before it dried. The reason for the weird shape in the matrix of the jaw is to help keep the insert in place. I am not super happy with the green color, but it still looks pretty good, at least to me. I am also not sure happy with the placement... Hope you enjoy! Cheers and Shalom, -Micah- 7 replies

I was on a walk and this rock had broken away from the bluff and was on the trail. Does anyone know what the fossil is?

Aquired a big megalodon tooth who seemed to have certain deformation/pathology to a certain extent. However, it looks like serrations has started to split off in two directions? I'm not familiar with this at all. Anyone who is more familiar with megalodon and shark teeth that can help?

Hello folks, I started prepping this oreodont skull fossil last year and discovered a bone in it's mouth!!!! I know Oreodonts are herbivores, so, I am assuming it ended up there as a result of shifting mud-etc. But I thought it was interesting and wanted to share my discovery. This project is still in process.

What is the Most Interesting Time Period to you?
Zenmaster6 posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I was curious about what peoples favorite Geologic Time period was. My favorites would have to be Early Cretaceous, because biodiversity was higher than previous times and we begin to see new life forms we might recognize today such as this 100 million year old bee I have. My second favorite is probably the Early Permian, entire Carboniferous and later Devonian because amphibians, therapsids, reptiles, sharks and plant evolution. (The chart below shows biodiversity.)- 20 replies

I found this while searching for fossils, didn't come up with much, but I still found them interesting. And I figured hey, I know a network of people who could tell me all about these sedimentary rocks and what they are all about. My guess is that one is plant matter. And the other is some kind of quarts (it was a huge slab that I picked up and broke open.) What do you see here with your expert eyes that my novice ones don't?

Large Interesting Bone New Jersey Cretaceous? Scute? Dinosaur? Turtle?
Kurufossils posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello everyone, had a super quick trip to the cretaceous creeks of new jersey and found this particularly interesting large bone fragment, likely it is a chunk of miscellaneous bone material but it reminds me alot of a scute like ankylosaurus or some sort of other bone scute especially the edge, or from maybe something like a large turtle but I am entirely not sure if it's dinosaur, marine reptile, etc or if there is anyway to tell, looks super suspicious to me anyways so if anyone has any ideas I'd definitely love to hear them. (If more pictures are needed I will definitely be able to get some more angles if necessary)- 10 replies

Hello fellow fossil-finders! I am back with a new fossil to be identified! Last Saturday I went to the Delaware Bay Beach with my cousins. We were looking for small fossils that were buried in this huge pile of rocks right at the edge of the water. The first fossil was found almost instantly. I believe it is honeycomb coral. Take a look. Next, I found something that I couldn't identify. It could be a barnacle for all I know. It has small grooves on the black side of the rock, seen here: Here is another view at the other side: Like always, if you can identify what this is, please tell me. Thanks! -Con

I found several interesting specimens from a nearby lake and river. I need help in identifying what kind of rocks they are. Thanks! I found this rock in a lake. I was able to grind it down with a grinding wheel, which leads me to believe it is < 6 mohs. Side not totally ground down Wet
