The first fossil mammal in my collection: a partial jaw of Merycoidodon sp.

Hello everyone, even though I haven't reached 35 fossils in my collection like I hoped for this year, I still managed to close 2023 with my 34th fossil! The one I'm going to show you today is, in fact, this 34th fossil, which is also the first mammal fossil I've ever owned Species: Merycoidodon sp. (Leidy, 1848) Size: ~3.0 cm long Age: 34-23 mya (Oligocene, stage indet.) Origin: South Dakota's Badlands (USA) About this fossil: a partial lower jaw of this genus, with four nicely preserved teeth. I personally like how, in this specimen, the matrix is still present, which helps to keep the two parts together and just makes the fossil look nicer- 1 reply

Hi, I recently got this cretaceous mammal tooth from the Hell Creek formation, and I was wondering if you may help me find the scientific name of the species that it belonged to. I've done some research and learned that it was the premolar of a Multituberculate mammal. This order of mammals was diverse and there were many species. I think it might be one of the members of the Genus, Mesodma, Yet I could be wrong. I tried to narrow it down to the exact species, yet there are few examples to help me pinpoint to a certain Id. This tiny tooth is from Garfield County, Montana. it is from the late cretaceous period (~67 - 66 Ma). It measures approximately at 3/16" long by 3/16" wide (5 mm x 5 mm). It is thin and blade-like towards the top of the crown. The enamel has a grooved texture on the surface. The overall shape of crown resembles a saw blade. Hopefully I would be able to id. this specimen and to learn more about it. Feel free to ask me for better images.

There's a new fossil ungulate-related article available online if anyone is interested: Nicolás R. Chimento; Federico L. Agnolin (2020). Phylogenetic tree of Litopterna and Perissodactyla indicates a complex early history of hoofed mammals. Scientific Reports 10 (1): Article number 13280. doi:10.1038/s41598-020-70287-5. The perissodactyl affinities of litopternans have been previously suggested by DNA-based analyses, but the paper by Chimento and Agnolin is the first morphology-based cladistic analysis to support a relationship between Perissodactylia and Litopterna. Moreover, some families assigned to the polyphyletic group "Condylarthra" are recovered as related to Perissodactyla, while the condylarth family Phenacodontidae is recovered along with Pleuraspidotheriidae as sister to Afrotheria (which includes elephants, aardvarks, hyraxes, elephant shrews, and sirenians).

Could belong to either Dasyurus viverrinus (Eastern Quoll), D. maculatus (Tiger Quoll) or D. geoffroii (Western Quoll).
