  1. Hello! I have this iridescent Petalodus tooth that I would like to preserve. Firstly, it has a severe crack though the matrix (see pictures). Secondly, is there anything that I should do with the tooth itself? What are my options? I appreciate your help.

  3. On Sunday/August/19/2023, myself and @Tales From the Shale went fossil hunting at some Late Pennsylvanian rock formations in Illinois! It was a pretty productive trip! We found lots of brachiopod fossils and an awesome amount of Chondrichthyian fossils! There are some fossils though that I'm a bit confused on their exact ID and I would like help identifying them? I put and photographed some of these specimens under a microscope and dissecting scope to help with species/genera identification. Here are the various and pretty awesome specimens from the trip I would like help Identifying: Unknown Specimen 1 (A Posible and partial Ctenacanthiform tooth) Unknown Specimen 2 (A Peripristis tooth but not 100% sure of exact species ID) Unknown specimen 3 (I think either Deltodus or another type of Petalodontid) Unknown specimen 4 (@Tales From the Shale helped me identify it as a bryozoan, but I forgot what type/genera he said it was (though he said it was pretty rare), I found at least 2 specimens of this type on this trip) Unknown Specimen 5 (Found on the same piece of matrix rock as Unknown Specimen 4, I'm not 100% sure what it is) Unknown Specimen 6 (some other type of bryozoan, I have no idea what could be it's exact ID) Unknown Specimen 7 (Found on the same piece of matrix rock as Unknown Specimen 6, some other type of bryozoan but I have no idea what could be it's exact ID) Unknown Specimen 8 (some other type of bryozoan, I have no idea what could be it's exact ID) Unknown Specimen 9 (A Possible small Petalodus tooth) Unknown Specimen 10 (A Possible small Deltodus tooth)

  5. As promised, my second trip report covering my day trip last October to the two most famous Pennsylvanian-aged fossil locales in Texas is here! That same Saturday after visiting Mineral Wells and finally finding my first trilobites I made the hour drive north to Lake Jacksboro. For those who don't know, the Lost Creek Dam on the southeastern side of Lake Jacksboro was constructed from earth dug out of a borrow pit a short walk away. As the lake and its dam happen to sit on top of the Finis Shale Member of the Graham Formation (although there is debate that , which dates back to the Late Pennsylvanian (or the Late Carboniferous for any international fossil hunters), the digging of the pit exposed a multitude of fossils that are still regularly being eroded out after every rain today. It's one of my favorite sites I've ever visited for the incredible diversity of the fossil species on display and the extreme ease with which someone willing to sit down on the shale can find them. Having just visited Mineral Wells, the variety of brachiopods, bryozoans, gastropods, bivalves, nautiloids, and corals was a welcome respite from the endless landscape of crinoid columnals I had just walked all over in my search for trilobites. Making my way across the dam and walking up to the expose shale slopes of the borrow pit, I was instantly greeted with the equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet for fossils. Everywhere I looked I saw something new. Right away I found a tripmaker: a huge shiny blue conulariid. It was complete too which was nice considering every one I had found on my first trip had been a broken fragment barely two centimeters across that I could only identify because of their ridged texture. Similar in appearance to modern day sea anemones when they were alive, there's nothing really like conulariids around today so I really enjoy finding such strange animals. Immediately following the conulariid was a second tripmaker: my first complete goniatite! Although small and lacking the ornate sutures that some species possess, I was just happy to finally find one that was complete. Broken fragments of other coiled nautiloids litter the shale slopes and I can only guess that there must be an incredibly short window to find one whole after it erodes out before it is destroyed. My guess is this one is Schistoceras. On the heels of one nautiloid find came another. I saw another mistakable coiled shell on the top of one of the slopes. Although it was flattened, I wasn't too upset. This specific specimen is most likely Domatoceras sculptile. Next up was a change of pace, with the largest brachiopod I've ever personally come across. The pedicle valve was speckled with stout but tiny spines and the shell material was partially stained a pinkish-orange in places which made a nice find even nicer. Identifying it wasn't hard as only one brachiopod at the site gets this large, Linoproductus. It was after finding the Linoproductus that I returned to the tops of the shale slopes. I had heard that the strata exposed here were the likeliest to produce the one type of fossil I was holding my breath hoping I might find. As everybody knows, my fossil interests lie with vertebrates first and foremost. I had never found one of the teeth that are colloquially said to have come from Pennsylvanian sharks but that actually come from a strange family of extinct cartilaginous fish called the Petalodontiformes. They would have cut an unusual figure during the Pennsylvanian with their buck-toothed grins featuring teeth that weren't sharp or even particularly hard like almost all fish and shark teeth that have evolved since. Fortunately I was in luck that day and the extra attention I had been paying to anything with a white enamel-ish look to it worked out. The tooth was missing the fragile root, which was expected, and about half of the blade, but I didn't care - I had found the oldest vertebrate fossil of my fossil hunting career! (Unfortunately I don't have any in-situ picture as I was too excited when I first saw the tooth to remember to take one. ) A couple paces in a different direction along the top of the outcrop and I had found a second tooth - this one possessing most of the blade but still no root. There was some matrix encasing the very tip that I later cleaned off when I returned home. Here are the two teeth side by side: Plus a picture of the smaller tooth once it was prepped: I tentatively identified these as either Petalodus ohioensis or Petalodus seratodus, but the in-and-out curving edges of the teeth don't perfectly match pictures I've seen online. I can only guess that this is just variation depending on the tooth's position in the mouth, or there might be a species of Petalodus at Jacksboro that just hasn't been noted yet. The sun was starting to go down by this point and I decided it was time to make my way back across the dam and to my waiting car. But as luck would have it there was one final surprise in store for me. Piled at the bottom of the slope were several huge chunks of nautiloid shell, arranged almost as if someone had visited the site before me and picked them up, before eventually deciding they weren't worth the trouble on their way out and dumping them on the ground. That there were two different species present seemed to support this. The two large chunks towards the top of the photo are from the grypoceratid nautiloid Domatoceras sculptile, absolutely the largest variety of coiled nautiloid you can find at Jacksboro. The smaller chunk with the bumps along the rim is a different nautiloid, Metacoceras. Here are some additional pictures of the Domatoceras chunks: And that was it for my Pennsylvanian day trip! Just a couple of weeks before I had put together a bucket list of all the different types of fossils I most want to find, and I was very happy that after this trip I was able to cross my first trilobite, a complete goniatite, and a Petalodus tooth off the list. A return trip is definitely in order! The day's best finds: Top: Petalodus ohioensis/seratodus Top Row: Parajuresania sp. I've been going through again more of the fossils I found with @Tales From the Shale on February 18, 2023 at a Pennsylvanian age, around 300 Million Years ago, rock formation in Oglesby Illinois. Their mostly small but I'm a bit curious on their species identities. I hope these specimens could be identified.
  7. Been meaning to post these photos a while back but got caught up with preparing for Spring Break. Here's some more fossils myself, @Tales From the Shale, and another friend found a few weeks ago at a Pennsylvanian age, around 300 Million Years ago, rock formation in Oglesby Illinois. I hope these specimens could be Identified properly. I have no idea what this specimen could be? Some brachiopod and possible Chomodus sp. bits I would like a proper ID for. Possible brachiopod? Possible brachiopod or shell crushing chondrichthyan tooth? I don't know what this is (maybe a part of a Ctenacanthiform tooth or part of a shell crushing chondrichthyan tooth)? Brachiopod specimen I would like a proper ID of.
  8. A few days ago I went on a fossil hunt with @Tales From the Shale and another friend to a rock formation of Pennsylvanian age, around 300 Million Years old, in Oglesby, Illinois. We also went to a second site in the Mazon Creek area in Braceville, Illinois. Today I decided to put some of the specimens I found under a dissecting scope to see them better and potentially get a proper ID for them. Here is a little Crinoid specimen (I think it may be the top part) Here is a nodule I found at the Mazon Creek site. @Tales From the Shale Identified the specimen as possible fossilized plant seeds.

    Trip to Oglesby 2/18/2023

    Two days ago I went with @Tales From the Shale and another friend on a fossil hunting trip to a Bond Formation Roadcut in Oglesby, Illinois with rocks dating around 307-303 Million years ago, to the Pennsylvanian section of the Carboniferous era. Hadn't been back to the site since October 2022 and it was good to be back! I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of snow. But it was clear it only melted very recently judging by the arm sized icicles and the mud. (Quick advice for anyone planning to go fossil hunting at this time in Oglesby: bring snow boots to balance yourself on the rocks and mud, they will be a life saver). Found the usual brachiopods and crinoid bits at first, but then I found a 5cm long crinoid stem (the most intact one I've found so far from the area). I don't know currently what species it belongs to. We worked for two hours at the site before heading to another site in Braceville before heading back to Chicago. Today, I looked at some of the specimens I found and realized I found a lot more than I initially expected. Definitely enjoyed finding the large brachiopods (the second one I believe is a large Linoproductus). Found some Bryozoan (species unknown), the first I've discovered in Oglesby. Found a small but still pretty cool Cladodont shark tooth around 1-2cm in length. Currently don't know the species yet. Another cool Brachiopod (I think it's a Punctospirifer species). Also found some Petalodus teeth, Trilobite pieces, and bits of Peripristis. I'll post those and more detailed images of the others when I have access to my college's microscopes later this week.
  10. Yesterday, I embarked on my second journey with the Austin Paleo Society to a famous spot: The Wilson Clay Pit. It's the site of a former clay quarry that was used for the production of bricks. Though it is in private hands, the land owners are very kind and allow fossil hunters to collect a diverse range of Pennsylvanian fossils on their property. One of prize finds from the pit is the highly-coveted Petalodus tooth. Some of y'all may remember me wishing to find one on my last trip to the Brownwood area, only to realize we weren't at the right sites to find them. Well, if there was a place to collect beautiful Petalodus teeth, it would be the Wilson Clay Pit. With that in mind, I excitedly set out on a starry night drive. When I arrived, the sun had just beaten me to Brownwood. Temperatures in Central Texas dropped off recently, so we were looking at a frigid day just above freezing. Everyone was covered head to toe in heavy duty winter wear. Nevertheless, optimism was high, so I didn't hear much complaining! When we got to the site, I was blown away by its dramatic terrain. All of the previous quarry work had created huge artificial mounds of gravel and slabs filled with a variety of vibrant colors. In my opinion, it didn't have the beauty of a natural landscape, rather, the inner fossil-hunter in me was simply in awe of the virtually limitless acreage of huntable ground. Exposed randomly throughout was the Harpersville Formation and Saddle Creek Limestone. After @erose gave us a brief introduction to the site, we all disappeared our own ways into the vast, maze-like property. Notice how there's no one else in the pictures? The pit is huge. If it weren't for the greenery, you might think it's Mars. Most people headed off to one side of the entrance or went straight to the back. I was drawn more to the opposing side where there was a huge mound to climb. My goal was to find a spot that hadn't been touched by previous hunters (some mentioned that the Houston club may have been there recently already), so I was trying to get to places a bit more tedious to reach. Crawling up the gravelly incline, I wiped out within the first ten minutes. Luckily, when I turned around, everyone was already gone . From there, things started off a bit slow. I was scanning the ground, picking up anything mildly interesting since it was all new to me. It took a thousand crinoid stems before my eyes locked onto the bright white color of what could be the "porcelain" appearance of enamel. Nope, just bird poop. This cycle repeated five times before I finally found my first undeniable chip of Petalodus! Lots of Petalodus chunks to be had. These are only the ones I decided to keep! I took this to be a sign that virgin ground was finally reached and immediately got to being more thorough in my search. Pretty soon, the tiny teeth bits became more common than the bird poop and my intensity increased accordingly. After a solid 15 minutes of following the cookie crumbs, I was met with a sight that stole my breath. Before me lay a stone with a giant Petalodus perfectly prepped by natural weathering. It was a hundred times better than what I had expected coming into the day. I quickly snapped a photo and got to carefully packaging it in my backpack. Already, my trip was made. An awesome Petalodus specimen. The tooth is about 45 mm across and 54 mm from top to bottom. The day was still young, so I got back up and went to searching. I think my eyes were only attuned to sharky things as those were what I was picking up the most. My bias towards white objects paid off even more as I accumulated a small collection of Deltodus fragments. I like that their white color contrasts nicely with the black Deltodus I found in my last PSoA trip. Halfway through the day, I looped back around to the entrance where I decided it would be best to drop off my prize find, in case I wiped out again later. Because of my vertebrate success from earlier, I set myself to make some invertebrate finds and give balance to my collecting. I found that the purple layer was invertebrate rich and had heard of the possibility for crinoid calyxes, trilobites, conularids, and more. Climbing up and sliding down the purple slopes was blast. There was often something new to reward the effort and my pockets were quickly heavy with brachiopods, crinoid material, and horn corals. This is not edited. The stuff really is this purple. Unfortunately, I wasn't making any out of this world finds on the invertebrate side, so I instead continued my search while also hiking around the entire perimeter of the pit. The eastern border extended pretty far. As I traveled that way, I noticed more and more chert covering the ground. Some had mentioned arrowheads being found on that side of the property, but I didn't see much worked material. As I circled around, I decided to say screw it with the inverts and go back to searching for teeth. I began inspecting rocks of similar appearance to the ones in which I had found teeth before and made a breakthrough. I couldn't believe it when I spotted the crowns of two decently sized Petalodus poking out of two separate boulders. Unfortunately, the limestone was very tough and I knew that getting them out without shattering them would be nearly impossible. My time would be better spent looking for more accessible ones; if there were two that could be found just like that, then surely there were many more nearby. After showing the teeth to Brian, another PSoA member, we both went on a quest to find a perfect specimen that could pop out. As I travelled up the adjacent mound, I did find a decently sized Petalodus, though most of the crown was missing from weathering. It came out in one piece, but I decided to give it away. Not so long after, I followed up with a beautiful smaller tooth that was entirely burnt orange. In my excitement, I forgot to take an in situ pic and immediately began planning a method of attack. Of course, such an awesome find just had to be buried under a thorn bush. Brian was a great help, pulling away the thorny branches so I could get in and make some swings with the hammer and chisel. It took some work, but the durable limestone eventually gave way and the chunk with the tooth came out. After gathering myself, I noticed that some of the root had splintered off. I did manage to locate one piece of it, but the rest was nowhere to be found. Can't win em all, but still happy with it nonetheless. Another beautiful Petalodus. This one is 37 mm wide and 33 mm tall. By then the sun was setting. Most of the group had already gone home, so it was just me, Brian, and Melvin atop the mound. We had some nice discussion, but I think we were all a bit worn out from a day's worth of running around this fossil hunter's paradise. The weather, too, had gotten tired of strangling us with cold, and a final gentle breeze flowed passed the hilltop. God rays poked out from the Westerly clouds to illuminate the distant expanse of greenery I hadn't noticed until then. The moment was nice. After saying our goodbyes, I was a little dejected seeing that I would soon no longer live in Austin and would thus miss out on a lot of future club activities. PSoA has got a really great community, and I'm glad I was there to experience a bit of it firsthand. Luckily, they do have a lot of trips far away from Austin, so I'm sure we will meet again for a future adventure, someday, once they travel close by my neighborhood. Until then, here are some pics of my finds from my latest PSoA field trip: Petalodus ohioensis? teeth Bryozoans, horn corals, and fusunilids Archaeocidarid plate, crinoid arm (Delocrinus) and stem, and a couple of oddities (perhaps conularid or Poterioceras cephalopod fragments?) Straparollus? gastropod and some gastropod from the order Bellerophontida Whole lot of brachiopods. I think bottom center is Meekella. Is that rare? I only found one.     Trip to Oglesby 10/08/2022

    A few days ago, I went with @Tales From the Shale and another friend on a fossil hunting trip to a Bond Formation Roadcut in Oglesby, Illinois with rocks dating around 307-303 Million years ago, to the Pennsylvanian section of the Carboniferous era. We worked for at least 5 to 6 hours, but it was worth it! This was one of the best fossil hauls I've had in a long time at that location! The true gem of that trip was this Cladodont tooth I discovered by sheer accident!!! The specimen may come from the Shark Gilkmanius, but I'm not too sure? The top part of the tooth might still be inside the rock. I found some of the largest crinoid stems I've ever recovered from this locality. Again, I'm not sure their genus identity?

    I found this shadow of a tooth that must have popped out of the rock when this rockpile was excavated to make a artificial pond or due to rain. I searched all I could at the base of the rock pile but no such luck. It most likely broke apart as these teeth absorb water and when they dry out it often makes them crack and crumble. I assume this one is a Petalodus sp. tooth as they are the most common i find in the area
  14. Since the weather was beautiful this morning after I did some rowing and grocery shopping, I decided to hit the Oglesby Road cut again. This cut exposes the Pennsylvanian LaSalle Limestone Member of the Bond Formation. This was another great day, I found another Petalodus tooth today, it is nice, but not as nice as the one I found last Sunday. I found a lot of huge brachiopods today after they popped out of the matrix. The exposure- Composita argentia Spiriferids- Neospirifer
  15. This morning I drove 45 miles to an auction that was taking place in Ottawa, Illinois. This auction takes place every couple of months starting in March and they usually have a lot of Native American objects and usually a few fossils. I the past I have purchased some Coconino trackways and a ton of Moroccan echinoids at a great price. Today I went because I was bored and wanted to see what they had. They had some Mazon Creek fossils in a box, some in a frame, some polished Orthoceras from Morocco, two small mammoth teeth and a 4” meg. The prices that were paid for these fossils was crazy, at least to me. I left after the fossils were sold and debated going home or driving 20 minutes farther to check out the small road cut in Oglesby, Illinois that exposes the LaSalle Limestone Member of the Bond Formation. This sight has been collected by a number of members on the Forum. I have not been here since 10-5-20 and decided to hit it for a few minutes. Once I drove up I knew that some of the head wall had come down, probably over the Winter and was hoping for something nice, I was not disappointed. Here are some pictures of the area. As you can tell from the pictures it is steep and talus filled and a roadcut that needs to be respected for it possible danger and not a sight for younger collectors. This location is a great site for some pretty and sometimes large brachiopods, including Spirifer, Composita argentia, Lindoproductus cora and Juresania nebrascensis. There are also inarticulate brachiopods and Petalodus teeth that can be found if you are lucky, I was lucky today. Here are some pictures of brachiopods that I came across today, many were left behind for others to collect. Some brachiopod cavities are filled with beautiful crystals. Continued on next post.

    Petalodus species?

    Found this past weekend at the Brownwood dam spillway in Texas. White tip was sticking out. Was on a large stone that tumbled from further up. It's really brittle, and was already cracked in the stone. Was trying to take it out with surrounding stone but it came out as I was doing it in a few pieces. Was hoping for a more specific species beyond the Petalodus genus if possible.
  17. Went out for a couple hours last Sunday afternoon. Found a few things that I kept. One tooth I was a couple rains to late. One tooth was just in time because the next rain would have scattered down the hill. And the biggest and best tooth was lucky to see at all in last patch of dirt I was going to look at. Also collected a neat branching bryozoa. And a couple large echinoid plates.

Location is in Missouri The area is dated to the Pennsylvanian most likely Raytown, Wyandotte Limestone I have found a few Prehistoric fish teeth in the area such as Orodus, Acrodus, Petalodus and some of their fragments. I believe the right sided one could be a Petalodus but I was not sure since I have not found a black tooth in the area besides this fragment. As for the left, I have no idea but I did note it had beautiful dimples along its surface.     Location is in Missouri The area is dated to the Pennsylvanian most likely Raytown, Wyandotte Limestone Hi I was wondering if anyone was able to identify these teeth I found together at the rock pile I hunted at, the right I believe could be a poorly preserved Petalodus tooth with its root and as for the left I have no idea and could be from a Petalodus if not the same one? I am not sure as I am not an expert at identify odd looking teeth yet. If possible I would also like to know the tooth placement if it is able to be determined.   21. I've found five Petalodus teeth and have been spending a lot of time reading research papers on them. I got the idea of trying to get released photographs for the 16 holotypes of named species within the Paleobiological database. I got the 16 named species from a list here: http://fossilworks.org/?a=referenceInfo&reference_no=42606 Petalodus ohioensis was easy enough to find, Yale publishes some of their collection online. Unfortunately the one in their collection is only a cast. The original may be lost. This paper has a few, including ohioensis. Taxonomic validity of Petalodus ohioensis (Chondrichthyes, Petalodontidae) based on a cast of the lost holotype – K. Carpenter, W. Itano Here are the 16 I am trying to get. I've asked permission for allegheniensis and I have ohioensis. I need to see if there are holotypes for the other 14 and which collections they are stored. I would love to create a public open web page that shows all 16 (if they exist).   22. Over the past year, I've become fascinated with the often bizarre fish and sharks of the Pennsylvanian. Fortunately, my home state of Illinois is a great place to hunt for such fossils. I've shared several of these in other posts before, but wanted to put everything together in one thread. Probably won't have much to post for a few months after this, but once summer rolls around, I should hopefully have plenty of new finds to share. I would say there are three major settings in which you can find fish fossils in Illinois: Mazon Creek, black shales, and limestone. I have not had luck at Mazon Creek yet, but hopefully that will change. So I'll start out with the black shales. These specimens, my first fish fossils, were collected in August 2019 from the Mecca Quarry Shale exposed at a clay quarry in Utica, IL. This shale directly overlies the Francis Creek Shale (i.e. Mazon Creek) at this location. The three specimens below are stomach ejecta from some kind of fish, and are composed mostly of partially digested fish scales. In addition, I found this very nice pair of associated acanthodian fin spines. The top fin has an area showing damage, possibly due to predation.

    Petalodous Teeth

    To date, I've found 4 teeth, all in the same general area. One is shallow, the others are a big longer. The 3rd is a bit broken, I don't think I have a photo online right now of it. All are attached firmly to the limestone and I don't have any hope of ever getting them out clean. 1st Tooth: 2nd Tooth: 3rd Tooth No photos of this one.   24. On my way out of town after a family gathering at Starved Rock State Park (it was packed like crazy with people, but I was still able to get a quiet hike in early Sunday morning with my mom. The food at the Lodge is not bad at all, also!) I made time to stop by one of my favorite sites, a roadcut near Oglesby, IL. This steep, talus-covered slope is known to produce generous quantities of brachiopods, as well as rarer shark teeth, cephalopods, echinoderms, trilobites and coral, among other things, primarily from the Pennsylvanian La Salle Limestone Member of the Bond Formation. With the wet weather this year plants had grown wildly over the slope, but there was still plenty of rock to explore. I got out of my car, jumped over the little brook running through the ditch, and made my way up the slope. As erosion slowly eats away at the bluff, fresh boulders fall away and expose new things. A large section had fallen last year, and at the top of the slope I saw another section perilously close to breaking away, so I steered well clear of it. Caution is definitely required at this site, especially because of the risk of rock fall near the overhang, but also the danger of slipping on loose rock and falling- a good sense of balance is very helpful! Working my way carefully along the cut I began to find some interesting things. First up was this hash plate- it doesn't look like much here covered in mud, but in the middle are some Archaeocidaris sea urchin spines, and it also features a number of crushed brachiopods, including some with spines, as well as crinoid stem pieces and other bits. I have started cleaning it up, so I will need to take a picture of it after I'm done.
