    My Mazon Creek Cabinet

I'm wrapping up the finishing touches on my Mazon Creek cabinet. I made custom lexan shelves. Wrapped the backer with basket weave vinyl. And mounted rope lighting around it. One problem is the plastic doors. They're shot and i need to replace them with good ol' fashioned glass. I also made all of the custom mounts for my collection. I tried to utilize as much space as possible, so i made the mounts all different sizes. All of the mounts are cut lexan. I still have to make a few more, but 99% are done. And if i ever have the luxury of finding better examples of the specimens i have now, i ca

    Belotelson magister (Shrimp Molt)
  3. This guy popped last week. It's a nodule from pit 11. Im not sure what to make of it. Its a poorly preserved whatsit, that's all i can say. It could be coprolite, with maybe a seed inclusion (see left side half with round "thing" towards the middle right)??? Or it looked kinda shrimpy, but just the tail of a shrimp (but this could be wishful thinking). I don't know..... Any help or suggestions is very much appreciated. Thanks for looking.

    What's In My Jelly?

So i found this guy already popped at pit 11 South Unit. To my surprise and untrained Mazon eye i saw what looks to be something associated with my Essex jellyfish. Any ideas? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Mazon Creek - Shrimp

Poorly preserved shrimp? Do folks agree? There is a noticeable gut line.....my guess is lebotelson given the longish rostrum....any other thoughts? Evan

    Fish Or Amphibian Eggs

Hi Folks- I had this concretion open to reveal a number of black dots. I don't see the traditional halo around the the dots that would make me feel more confident about an egg sack identification. What do folks think?

    Mazon Creek - Shrimp Molt

Hi Folks- Do folks agree that this is JUST a shrimp molt? I have a number of molts - this happens to be the best I have. It is also very difficult to ID from a molt based on my research? Evan

    Mazon Creek - Polychate Worm?

Hi Folks- Can anyone ID this concretion? I believe this is a polychate worm - but I suspect it is in a lateral view presentation. Folks agree? Evan

    Mazon Creek - Pit 11

Hi Folks- A friend of mine found this fossil and asked me for help IDing. At first glance I thought it was a polychaete worm - Oliver Hardy. But the 3D presentation makes me wonder if it might be somehting else. Any thoughts? Evan

Mazon Creek - Pit 11 Id Help Needed

Hi Folks- I had this concretion open last night - and I am stumped as to what this might be. If I had to guess I would say priapulites or a cast of some sort, but I know the priapulites is very rare (so obviously am quite skeptical about that ID). Under a loupe, you can make out horizontal striations - and I believe there is a mouth opening on the distal / rounded end. What has me stumped is whatever was in the concretion was in a sacrophagus of sorts and left a very distinct negative. Any thoughts appreciated! Happy collecting.
  11. Hi Folks- A couple of other fossils exposed themselves last night. One I believe is a problematica fossil described as a Y or "wye". The other is coprolite....which I normally wouldn't share - but this is a very well preserved piece of !*@*.

    Mazon Creek - Pit 11 - Unknowns

Hi Folks- Any idea what the two below might be....these are recent Pit 11 openings.
  13. Hi Folks- The Pit 11 area around the perimeter of the lake is very overgrown at this point - although I have been able to get out and collect some. While the Essex fauna definitely has a higher percentage of duds versus the braidwood locales - the diversity of faunal species is much more robust. Other than one cyperites plant with great points - most of my finds have been faunal in nature. See below. A coprinoscolex

    Need Help

I am from Louisiana and I have been to Mazonia in the past with some success in the south unit. I will be going out there May 4th, 2013 this saturday to collect fossils for a fossil park my wife and I built in Louisiana for the purpose of getting kids interested. Any tips or tag alongs would be welcome. Where is pit 11,?
