Hey all, I realize I've been incommunicado quite a bit this year - it's been a bad one. Things got real bad at the office and both my wife and I resigned from our department and we've been working for a new nonprofit in Charleston. But, I AM alive and returning to active status here on TFF now that 1) the forum has been upgraded and is functioning and 2) I've had some breathing room and time to unwind after leaving a deeply toxic work environment. I've also made a conscious effort to get back into blogging more frequently and have written/posted quite a lot in 2023. My most recent post summarizes a bit of an interesting and ongoing debate in whaleontology: when exactly did baleen whales become gigantic? Anyone who has spent any time in the Pliocene of the Carolinas or Florida knows that baleen whale fossils that are only a few million years old are nowhere near as large as the gigantic skeletons of modern whales hanging in museums. So, what gives? I've written a blog post that goes into a fair amount of detail regarding competing ideas for the evolution of body size in baleen whales - shown above is skull width of archaeocetes, odontocetes (toothed whales) and mysticetes (baleen whales) through time. Good afternoon, just finished reading about how the Colorado river in Austin was essentially the beach during the mid-Holocene. I’ve attached the image from the article showing this sea level rise. This article reminded me of all the oyster shells I find in select spots along the Tavis/Bastrop county line. There are also archaeological sites in the area where marine diatoms are documented dating to the mid Holocene. Curious if anyone has heard of this. The article is from July of this year.

This one is for the marine mammal experts out there: I found this while I was beach combing on Guam. At first I thought it was just a piece of branching coral, but then realized that it is entirely encrusted by calcareous algae, and perhaps some bryozoan. Upon further inspection I noticed the shape. It has an uncanny resemblance (to my untrained eye) to a metapodial bone, perhaps pinniped? Or perhaps I’m wishful thinking. It would be Holo-Pleistocene in age. Thoughts? Thanks

What animals lived with humans and mammoths during the Younger Dryas in new england?

(I ask for paleoart purposes) what animals lived in the northeastern, more specifically New England, even most specifically massachusetts/cape cod. I want to make a peice with some megafauna that lived during the Younger Dryas, and mabe some early humans if my inability to draw humans becomes at least somewhat better. Thank you! -
