Hello! I just completed my second trip out to Point A Dam in River Falls, AL and found a couple of interesting things that I cannot seem to ID. Due to traveling, I only took a few pictures and had to use a coin for scale before moving to my next destination, so I apologize for the lack of quantity and quality of my photos. When I get time, I can take more images of the samples below upon request. Thank you! 1: I’m leaning toward Angel shark (?) 2: Legitimately do not have a clue… Maybe stingray related as it is long and cylindrical but it has confounded me. It does have a hole through the center that was difficult to image, presumably for soft tissue. 3: Once again, I don’t have a clue. The bottom of these pieces are smooth and concave below the central “peak.” 4: Miscellaneous pieces. Very well could be nothing but figured I may as well post them.

Took my shark obsessed 8 year old to Point A Dam for the first time yesterday! The water level was fairly high so we hung out in the first bend but he had a blast! He found 388 items (whole and pieces) total. We know what the more common ones are (lemon, tiger shark, stingray mouth plate bits, some bull possibly) but there a few were unfamiliar with! I'm guessing picture #6 is nurse shark? #7 honeycomb coral? #8 tip of a coral? and I dont have a guess of what the other items are.

Hello! I found these two teeth while fossil hunting at Point A Dam in Andalusia, AL and noticed that at least one appeared to be more reptilian than shark. Sizes are ~1 cm each Though it was hard to get a decent image, this tooth is extremely flat. This tooth is very round, which led me to believe it may not be a shark’s tooth. Thank you for your time!

I want to take a friend over to the dam but last time I went, which was maybe a couple years ago, the road down was extremely rough and in bad shape for a car. Has anyone been this year that can tell me the state of the road that takes you into the little parking area? Many thanks

Point A Dam, Ala and Northern Panhandle Sites in Florida Still Around?
NickG posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I have an upcoming trip around the Point A Dam in Alabama. Is this site still in good shape with the recent weather that's been cranking through the south? If the dam is out, are there any other good sites still in existence in 1-3 hours drive south of Andalusia? I've read about a lot of northern panhandle sites in Florida but wondered if they're still in existence or have been wrecked with Hurricane Michael. Also, I work mostly dry sites in the Paleozoic of West Virginia. Is this a site where muck boots are warranted? If so, are mid calf height enough or better to have waders that go over the knee? I'm wondering the same thing at some of the Northern Panhandle of Florida sites which apparently are mostly stream and creek beds? One friend mentioned old shoes and wool knee highs being enough. Would love to hear opinions of others. -
Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and so far everyone has been great. I am temporarily stationed in Biloxi MS and wanted to go shark teeth or fossil hunting. From the research I found the closest to be Point A dam in Alabama. Anyone have any tips? I’ve never really been so not sure what to do or what to take with me. Thanks so much for the help!!

Please help identify these teeth from Conecuh River, Andalusia. I pulled about 500 teeth out of the deposits and these tiny teeth are the only ones of its kind in the bunch. They are about 5mm X 7mm. Thanks.

Is this a shark coprolite? Found with Eocene shark teeth in south central Alabama. Feels lighter than a rock of the same size. Is about 1cm x 2.5cm

Point A Dam .. Advice .. Wow, look at all of that rain !
Brett Breakin' Rocks posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Ok, so it wouldn't be my first rodeo in a nice steady rain, or a torrent sans lightning of course. But for those of you familiar with Point A Dam in Alabama would the weather report this week turn you off ? Do you have a go-to for weather and water levels ? I have a small window with my brother and he's been itching to get out with me somewhere .. anywhere .. and Point A is closest to us here in Gulf Shores. We may huff it over to Florida if the weather looks too crappy .. but any advice would be welcome. If you'd rather a PM I'd be fine with that too. Thanks, Brett- 15 replies

Please help...can't find the eocene site in Andalusia Alabama!
FreeAngelRN posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I'm new and not well versed in paleontology, but I'm in Andalusia for three days and looking to hunt. I arrived yesterday, followed directions to the point A Dam but it led me to a fishing bridge with red clay everywhere. A few new oyster shells scattered but no terrain that looked limestone. Would anyone help me to find a dig site? Yes, it's been raining, but I hope there's still some fun to be had. Thanks! Angel -
I finally made it to Point A and can scratch one off my bucket list after successfully finding some teeth:) It was a slow start since this was my fist time and I was unsure of areas to search but after a while I started to locate some teeth and a few other small things that I am unsure of. I spent the afternoon here and had a blast. I will definitely return sometime hopefully in the near future. We found around 40 teeth but only half or so are complete,or at least I think lol. I would like to see if anyone could help me to identify a few of them.

Considering a trip to Point A Dam this coming week if anyone is interested
still looking posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I am planning a trip to the dam this week, probably Wed(8-10) or Fri(8-12), if any one wants to meet up. This will be my first time and I noticed we may have some rain in the forecast. I realize, after reading some of the other posts, that this plays a part on the releasing of the dam. Does anyone know if the dam releases at a certain time each day or is it at various times when it reaches a certain level? Thanks!- 8 replies
