so I know that in order to hunt for fossils at the braidwood area you need a permit (https://www2.illinois.gov/dnr/Parks/Activity/Documents/MZB_FossilPermit.pdf), but i’m not entire sure how to get one when i search up online a PDF comes up that can be filled out. Do i just fill this form and then send it to the DNR? Also, who can get the permit? Like, would it be limited to scientists/professionals or can the general public sign up for it too? Any clarification would be really appreciated. Also, let’s say I got the permit. What would be the best places to go if I wanted to look for fossils mainly from the essex biota?

Are fossils purchased from businesses generally coated/protected?

This question came to me after thinking about a few fossils I bought online a little while ago (trilobite, fish). Are these types of fossils normally coated with anything to protect them from the environment, or is that something for the purchaser to do?

I found this thing near the hoodoos in drumheller alberta and it doesn't look like any rock I've ever seen.

Petrified wood that appears to have a somewhat cut end pre-petrification

I think I know this answer but is feasible that a piece of petrified (real) could have an end of it that was cut (doesn’t appear like a newcomer) it’s just a chopped off end in a perfect cut but not like a shear break and this piece is course like it wouldn’t break like that if it broke and it looks original. Not sure if that makes sense. It’s a whitish piece and came with a cross section slice of another piece that was with it. But I know to be petrified it was before mankind so couldn’t be cut back then? -
Howdy folks. I had a question about soaking mazon creek nodules before starting the freezing process. I’ve had mine soaking in water for 2 days (prior to the first freeze, will be several more days), and there seems to be oil on the surface of the water. Is this normal, or is it something I should be concerned about? This is my first time doing this, and I just want to make sure I’m doing it right. It is just plain water, I’ve added nothing else to it. Thank you!!!

So I am thinking about getting an unprepared oreodont skull. But I was wondering how hard it is to prepare one and if I should buy something less expensive to work on? Thanks in advance! Ps. I have a little bitt of experience with preparing fossils.

Hello all, I have a question about fossil fragment souvenirs sold in various gift shops. Does anyone have information on who/what company distributes them? I bought one not too long ago, and from the tag I can’t gather much on the company or location other than being made in USA. I know an ID is impossible, and am just trying to find a possible formation of origin. The only thing I could find is Google searching 1586b and having it possibly be from Utah. Thanks as always!

I found this rock on the edge of the hill in my backyard in Helotes, Tx. The previous heavy rains have exposed a lot on my hillside. I am in sure what the wood looking pieces are in pictures 3&4. If anyone is familiar, that would be great.

Hello everyone! I recently dug this out of a stash that's been in my family for a while. It appears to be a mammoth tusk section (with one end polished). Also, the outer part appears to have "bark " like characteristics and the polished side looks to have a different color that by other pieces I own. It appears to have schreger lines , but looks a lot different from other's I've seen in the past (color, texture, hole in middle ). This was in a box with several other items, including petrified wood. I am obviously not familiar with tusks and just wanted to see what the forum members had to say. It is 12.7mm x 22.9 cm . Thank you!

I've been looking at some Russian bugs, but all of them have anywhere from 2-8% restoration. I'm still new to collecting, so I'm not sure how much restoration is too much.

I have a rock with a lot of fossils in it - What should I do?

Hey all! So I found what appeared to be a large geode, but upon further investigation turned out to have 5 or 6 fossils imprints! They seem to be seashells, scallop-like so possibly bivalves or brachiopods. I'll attach the pre-cleaning pictures below, then some more later after I rinse it and dry it off. My big question is: since this thing definitely has fossils (I can see at least two are half buried in the stone matrix) and is very likely a geode (it's heavy, has dimples, and I can see shiny facets in a few of the dimples), what should be next step be? I wanted to crack it open along the big crack down the side of it, thinking it would expose a crystal core. But I see these fossil imprints and I don't want to risk breaking them in cracking open the rock. So then, since I've only found some amateur fossil finds (mostly in riverbeds and on beaches), what should I do next? Seems to me the likely responses are crack it open and hope for the best (immediate gut-reaction of anxiety for fear of smashing the imprints too), or try to securely remove or break off the fossil fragments for a bigger cracking later, or to airblast portions of it, or to send it to a museum? I'm not certain and I definitely don't want to damage the thing in the meantime as the sheer age of it has made me quite fond of it. Any advice or recommendations would be welcome!!

On this piece of chert it appears to have either an iron or copper coloring at the top but a green undertone at the bottom. On the second picture I’m assuming that was caused by erosion. What would create the green undertone coloring?
