Map of US precipitation Amounts for 100, 500 and 1,000 year Intervals
DPS Ammonite posted a topic in Members' News & Diversions
Want to know what 100, 500 or 1,000 year rainfall events look like for any point in the US? Here is a very interesting chart that estimates predicted precipitation amounts in the US for many time periods that have occurrence intervals such as 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 years. If you know how much precipitation fell in a time period at a specific locality you can estimate its recurrence interval. Maybe some of our Florida members can tell us if they have heard of any 100 year rainfall events from Ian near them. With this chart, more rain gauges and better radar precipitation estimates, we probably are hearing about more 100 to 1,000 year events. Hearing about more events via the media is not empirical proof that they are all caused by climate change. (I am not arguing against climate change.) A couple of years ago a one square mile area about 3 miles away received just over 5 inches of rain in one day, a 1,000 year rain. It was confirmed by one rain gauge and radar estimates. 30 years ago this event may have gone unnoticed and unrecorded. Check out the chart for Arcadia, Florida where the Peace River has risen to record levels. A 16 inch 1 day rainfall would have a recurrence interval of about 1,000 years. I bet Ian came close to that in other parts of Florida. May our Florida members stay safe.
