While walking the beach my wife found this oddly shaped rock. She was looking for “ heart shaped” rocks but after looking at it a bit it seemed like it has a margin where the tooth enamel might have been. That tooth face also has what seems like microscopic tubulas which might have once been the dentin. It’s certainly not pristine as it does have a defined point. It’s about 3-3.5 inches at the longest points. It could just be a rock but I was curious your opinion

I have these finds that I would like some assistance on deciding what they are. Two of them I am unsure that they are even fossils while the third may be a sphenopterid but I am unsure. Thank you all for your help! Carboniferous of Rhode Island. Scale is in cm.

Does anyone know what this is? I found it in Rhode Island, on the outskirts of the Narragansett basin. It looks symmetrical and segmented. I think it’s an invertebrate fossil, but I really have no idea. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Possible Diplopoda-3.tiffHello all, I’m hoping someone could lend their eyes and give their opinion on something I found. This is from a small rock I found near the Narragansett Basin area of Rhode Island. I recovered it from an undeveloped plot of commercial land that is sometimes used as a construction fill dump, so I don’t know where it originally came from. It appears to have a symmetrical pattern, but I could be seeing what I want to see. Rhode Island fossils are from the Pennsylvanian Period (mostly ferns, horsetails, some trilobites and occasional insects). If anyone could shed some light on this I’d be very appreciative!

Fossils in Pennsylvanian shale from the Narragansett Bay Area in Rhode Island?

Would somebody please help me make sense out of some of the things I’ve found? The stuff looks like fossilized organic material to me, but I really don’t know what I’m looking at. These are embedded in Pennsylvanian period shale found in the Narragansett Bay Area of Rhode Island. Some were found in woods near the Blackstone river, others were found in an undeveloped plot of commercial use land that’s been used as a dump for all sorts of rocks used in construction, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fossil Amphibian/Reptile Footprint? Carboniferous of Rhode Island.

I found this on a Beach on the west side of Narragansett Bay. I have found numerous plant fossils less than 2 miles away from here and I think that it has some potential to be a footprint. The impression goes deeper where there would be claws and it appears to have 3 toes. I would love to hear what others have to say. It looks very similar to others that I have seen from the Rhode Island Formation (middle to late Pennsylvanian). I will provide more pictures if necessary.

Hi Everyone, I'm very new to fossil hunting and was considering going down to Cory's Lane in RI as it's only about 40 minutes from me. I scoped the place out on Google Maps and have some questions for anyone that's hunted there. Do you need a permit to fossil collect in RI? It looks like you can't collect in state parks, but I don't think this area is a state park. I'm actually not even sure if it's town property or private? Google wasn't much help and I'm not really sure which department it would fall under to go through state websites. Are people actually allowed to go along the water edge to collect, or is it all private property and we hope no one notices? It looks like there is a residential area and then a school further up the shore line. I don't want my first experience doing this (out of state, no less) to put me on the wrong end of the law. How's the parking situation there, the lot looks very small, like maybe 4 cars max. Are you allowed to park on the street if there's room? I didn't notice any signs when I street viewed the area. I was considering having a family member come with me and they drive an SUV compared to relatively small hatchback. Is anyone here a member of RIMH? Is the club active, is it worth joining if I can, I live in MA? Thanks for any info!

Hey there!! I’m back with a few more pictures of my finds from Corys Lane in Rhode Island. Being a beginner I’m slowly getting a hang of fossil hunting but sometimes you always find some cool looking rocks that convince you otherwise and you hope they’re a fossil. So help me out to determine if these ones are maybe a fossil or just a cool find. Also this trip was very fun and the most productive so far. The weather was cloudy accompanied by a cool breeze, not too many people on the beach during low tide. Only a few fishing hobbyists very curious about what we had caught in our buckets. They were a bit confused when they saw that we caught rocks. We had a laugh about it and spent some time walking along the train tracks before calling it a day which is something I would highly recommend. TIA

I gathered these fern fossils from Cory’s lane in Rhode Island recently. Need some help with their identification. My guess is they look like Pecopteris but any more specific identification would definitely help.

This afternoon I headed to Cory’s Lane for some digging. I unfortunately completely forgot about the tide, but thankfully it wasn’t very high when I arrived. A group of four was already there, and they said they didn’t find much “except for maybe a piece of grass.” The shale is very crumbly and oily, and virtually blank most of the time, so my hopes were not very high. I did find some decent, albeit very badly preserved ferns. Identification of these is very much welcomed, as I don’t know much about these. Rhode Island Formation, partially metamorphosed. My first find, Crenulopteris? Weird fern that was at a different angle to the bedding planes. Very badly preserved. A decent fern. Another I think of the same species, split from the first block. Some weird rusty things. Macrospores? The day’s haul. It was quite fun, the shale did split easily, it was just quite dirty and greasy. I should return again at a later time and hopefully find better material.

I’m new to fossil hunting and just spent Saturday searching for fossils in Rhode Island. I spent about two hours at Cory’s Lane and found two possible fossils. I’m wondering if anyone can help identify these? I had a lot of fun searching there and plan on going back. Thanks so much for any help.

Just came back from a fossil hunting trip. Most of my findings are on softer shale rocks so they’re very delicate. Really would appreciate your help to identify whether they’re a fossil or just a cool looking rock. I have tried my best to take good pictures but I am willing to post again if anyone wants a different angle.

Today I made my first trip to Cory’s Landing in Portsmouth, Rhode Island to split Pennsylvanian shale. I spent about three hours there and found numerous specimens. I think they’re Pecopteris, but I would like to defer to you fine people on the Forum who have more experience than I. If anyone can give a more precise ID - or an altogether new ID - that would be extremely helpful. Likewise I found a few strips of shale with strange sectioned streaks(pictured) that I can’t identify. I’m willing to conclude it’s just nothing, but thought I would ask. If anyone would like me to try and take better pictures let me know. Thank you, all!

(First post so sorry if there are formatting errors) Yesterday I took my first fossil hunting trip ever and had some beginners luck! I went to Cory’s Lane in RI and stayed for about an hour and a half. I found a few pieces (pics below) that I’m really proud of. I’m not sure if the large one with big lines in it is a fossil so if anyone knows that would be great. All that said, I still have no idea what I did right (or what I was doing wrong). Some members told me that I should go for the dark grey shale and not the graphite-black stuff, which I tried to do. I was also told gentle digging would produce shale that may hold better prints but didn’t have a shovel with me. I definitely intend to go again so any tips on improving my technique for that site would be appreciated. I was also wondering if there is a way to tidy these up/make the imprints stand out at all? I looked at some posts about PVA etc. but those seem to be techniques for museum-grade pieces (which I know these aren’t). Also the first picture has lots of what I assume are rust stains and I was wondering if it’s possible to remove those without destroying the prints?

Hi! My 6 year old is very interested in fossils so we took a trip to Rhode Island today to see if we could find anything at a shale beach. Might anyone be able to help ID the following? We aren’t sure and would love to be able to help him determine if he found something, and if so what it might be. My googling is coming up empty handed, and we just started our learning journey. I have this fossil here which at first glance I perceived to be some kind of seed, however I’m not sure. These are both from the same individual, just the positive and negative sides. It is just shy of half an inch long. It was found in the North Attleboro section of the Rhode Island formation

I’ve just found this on my property in upstate Rhode Island, and I’ve never found fossils here before. My first opinion was that it was a graptolite but I’m not sure what it could be, the host rock is full of these things

Hello everyone, this is Jonathan (Shin Alpha), I’m currently in college as a paleontology major and I’ve been busy with life as always, my apologies for my inactivity but due to my busy schedule, I’ve been largely inactive. I was able to find some plant fossils at a nearby outcrop in the Middletown/Cromwell area in CT. And I’ve since donated my finds to Central Connecticut state university geology department. that being said I’ve heard of a Paleozoic site in Newport, Rhode Island called “Cory’s lane“. I’d love to go there one of these days when I have the opportunity, but I don’t know too much about it. Or where the site is at specifically. Feel free to comment down below
