    Squalicorax kaupi?

    Shown below is a tooth, identified by the seller as that of a Squalicorax pristodontus, from the Demopolis Chalk. However, given the shape of the tooth, I wondered whether it could have instead come from a Squalicorax kaupi. I've tried altering the saturation and contrast on the image to make the tooth clearer, but I fear it hasn't done much. Come to think of it I should probably also have included a scale and an image of the other side of the tooth. The tooth is 1.2 centimetres wide and 1.3 centimetres tall. Should an image of the other side of the tooth prove necessary, I'll upload one. Thanks in advance for any suggestions Othniel

  5. Hi All, Thought I'd share some of my finds from a couple hour trip to Big Brook Preserve in Monmouth County, NJ (Monmouth group). Started off the trip stumbling upon a living fossil, who I let do his thing and swim on by! Found some pretty amazing non-living fossils as well. A mix of shark (Crow and Gobblin), Enchodus, Belemnites, few crustacean bits (likely Ghost Shrimp) and a few types of mollusks (Exogyra, Pycnodonte). Thanks for looking, and feedback good/bad is always welcome. Scale - Coin is 2cm/21mm or 7/8".

  8. Hello all! I've been getting ready for the Aurora Fossil Festival (and working on my new display cabinet), and have been going back through my Holden Beach finds. I wanted to share a compilation of my visits to Holden Beach, North Carolina from 2022 to 2023. I have gone 5 times since the replenishment project occurred there: April 2022, twice in October 2022, February 2023, and April 2023. While I was mostly picking up the Hardouinia mortonis echinoids, I found a little bit of everything out there. There was so much that I couldn't include everything, so I stuck with the best of my finds. It's truly amazing what all can be found washing out down there! I am still fairly new to fossils in general, and I'm far from confident in my ability to I.D. a lot of things. That being said, I have tried my best to identify what I could. Any corrections or advice is more than appreciated! I can also take additional pictures if anyone wants a better look at anything here. Here are all my sharks teeth. I am not great with the I.D.s on all of these, but I do know the names to a few varieties. I have tried to group them together by what little I know, and by appearance if I'm unsure. Lots of great white and crow shark teeth were to be found. April 2022, October 2022 and February 2023: This one in particular is my favorite shark find of 2022. It's the largest Great White tooth I've found, and aside from a small chip off of the side and the tip it's in really good shape. It's right at 6 cm (2.36 Inches) long, but I have no doubt it would have been longer with the tip undamaged. (April 2022) April 2023: A modern Sand Tiger tooth snuck in as well. Now for my absolute favorite tooth, my only mostly intact Megalodon tooth that I've found to date. This one is right at 9.52 cm (3.75 Inches) long in it's current condition. (April 2023) On to my Hardouinia mortonis, this is a group photo of my best finds from all trips. The Holden Beach ones get fairly large compared to some of the quarry finds I've seen! I have several well over 5 cm (~2 Inches) in diameter. These are specimens with minor pathologies. The apical disc sometimes is "dented" on these specimens, and I've found a few with "peanut" shaped petals. (Various trips) This is a specimen with a more moderate pathology. the whole shape is unusual, and one petal is turned at about a 20-30 degree angle towards the posterior. (February 2022) These are some of my current "project" echinoids. Due to being found on the beach, they tend to be saturated with salt. while I try to manually remove some matrix periodically I give them a good soak in water for a few days, then leave them out to dry and see if salt crystals are still forming. Sometimes it takes a few tries to completely rid the salt. This batch has some Hardouinia mortonis of some pretty varied shape. (Various trips) These are mostly Mosasaur teeth, though there may be a few crocodilian teeth snuck in there as well. I'm not exactly sure which species of mosasaur these are, there are some distinctly different shapes to some of them. (Various trips) I found plenty of Mosasaur teeth without roots, but only one root without a tooth! The kind folks at Aurora helped me identify this, I wasn't sure what it was. (April 2022) I never got this one identified, but it's definitely a piece of some jaw with a tooth root. Perhaps also Mosasaur, but I'm not sure. (April 2022) Of course there was also plenty of Exogyra to go around, and way too many to photograph! This is a small cluster of them in the matrix, and the largest intact specimen I found, at around 10 cm (~4 Inches) long. (Cluster from April 2022, large one from October 2022) (*EDIT 6-18-23 with proper I.D.) These are Cretaceous Prehepatus harrisi crab claws. All but one came from the April 2022 trip (the darker is from February 2023). These are Pleistocene Equus teeth I found in April 2022. There was a much smaller fourth fragment as well I didn't photograph. This is one of my favorite finds: a Pleistocene Odocoileus antler fragment. It resembles a modern White-Tailed Deer antler fragment! (April 2022) A very large bone fragment from April 2022. Not sure what from, almost looks like a vertebra. Around 9 cm (3.54 Inches) long. A Rhombodus binkhorsti tooth, my only one found. (April 2022) Other Ray teeth and barbs (Various trips) My first and only Pycnodont mouth plate fragment (April 2023). Some sizable shark vertebrae. (Various trips) Some Sawfish rostral teeth and a few select Enchodus fangs / jaw fragments. (Various trips) Some Sea Robin skull plates. (Various trips) Some turtle carapace fragments, and possibly a Crocodilia Dermal Scute (Various trips for the turtle fragments, April 2023 on the scute) This is an interesting bone fragment that, according to the folks at Aurora, might have signs of a shark attack or feeding due to the triangular groove on it. (April 2022) Plenty of steinkerns to pick up! (Various trips) While I found a few isolated casts of ammonite chambers, this is by far the largest and best one. I'm not exactly sure what species, but after reading my NCFC book I'm leaning towards Sphenodiscus lobatus. (October 2022) Unknown vertebra, pretty heavily worn. About 4 cm (1.57 Inches) long. (April 2023) My Sirenia vertebra. (Thank you @Boesse for helping me confirm this!) (April 2023) The folks at Aurora have said this is likely a young Mastodon molar fragment. I've seen even smaller fragments with a similar shine and color that might also be some kind of Proboscidea tooth fragment. (April 2022) A fragment of some unknown echinoid. It doesn't resemble Hardouinia to me, it almost looks more like a fragment from something in the Spatangoida Order. I'm not 100% sure on it though. I wish there was more of it to look at! (April 2023) And last but not least, a couple of Sirenian rib fragments. (April 2022) Bonus pic: These are my favorite Hardouinia mortonis specimens. I had someone at work etch me out the plaque on a laser.
  9. Hi All, Had some time off from work this past Friday, and decided to take a drive out to Big Brook to do some hunting. Had a pretty successful outing, finding some of the biggest shark teeth (Goblin) I've found in my handful of visits to the Brook. Would have been very happy to leave with just those few pieces. The best find of the day was a piece of a Mastodon tooth. I'm still learning, and at first didn't realize what I had, thinking it may be part of a turtle scute (still new to all of this). Thanks to a couple members of the "Fossils and Native American Artifacts (NJ and surrounding areas)" Facebook group, they were able to pin an ID. Compared it to some photos of other examples and it definitley looks like Mastodon. Totally blown away by this find!! Had a few other nice pieces photgraphed below. Last piece of the day was what appears to be a rib bone. Could very well be modern White Tail Deer, as the brook is rich an iron, and can stain the bone pretty quickly. I found the Goblin Shark teeth in the same deposit, but also found a partial of a more modern deer jaw. Jaw was partially white and brown (didn't save as I could tell it was modern). In any case, not sure if it's anything but a modern deer rib. Feedback good or bad is appreciated. Thanks! Calm day @ the Brook. Couple sifts in, and pulled this tooth. Good start!

    Great White Approximate Age

    I would like to know the approximate age of the fossilized Great White teeth pictured in my hand that I have found over the course of the last 9 months at Holden Beach North Carolina. (since August of 2022) These were found in addition to many other fossilized teeth that I have captured in additional pictures found below. Thank You
  12. Been a minute since posting but here's my question: I have found many Crow (squalicorax) and Goblin (Mitsukurina owstoni) teeth in a particular area and was wondering if I could expect any larger shark teeth to be found in the same immediate area? Any info is appreciated ☺️ ><^;>

    Squalicorax cf. falcatus Turonian Texas Variation within Squalicorax falcatus. Since they all came from the same locality, odds are overwhelmingly favorable that they all represent the exact same taxon. Squalicorax exhibits great variation within the same species, and, of course, by tooth position in the mouth.

  15. This month I decided to take on the challenge of finding my first Kamp Ranch sites. It's not the easiest thing to do since, to my knowledge, the elusive layer is not mapped anywhere. I spent a lot of time scouring the waterways of North Texas and by the end, I came up with two distant potential spots for a couple days worth of hunting. I traveled to the first site one sunny morning and after a long walk, I finally made it to the water's edge where I met endless limestone slabs filled with Collignoniceras woollgari impressions, meaning I was just in the right place. I readied my rock hammer and began the search. It was mostly just oyster fragments initially, but soon enough I started picking some nice Squalicorax and tiny Ptychodus anonymous. The Kamp Ranch was pretty hard, and that meant that the Squalicorax rarely survived extraction. Even the Ptychodus, which are usually quite resilient, ended up shattering more than I'd like to admit. I built up a steady flow of Ptychodus anonymous before spotting an enigmatic crusher tooth. I was excited since it appeared to be very large and of a rare species, but it turned out only to be a fragment. What's strange about it is the flat crown and few yet thick transverse ridges on top. The only species I know of this nature is Ptychodus latissimus, but in Texas those are better known to begin in the Basal Atco (Early Coniacian). I did some research at home and found that P. latissimus has been observed in Middle Turonian outside of Texas, so I suppose it is a possibility here. Possible Ptychodus latissimus After some more finds like a huge Xiphactinus tooth and Cretoxyrhina cusp, I at last flipped the slab that would yield the definitive best find of the day. In perfect condition was the biggest Ptychodus anonymous I had laid eyes on. I was familiar with the fact that the Turonian P. anonymous morphotype was supposed to be larger, but it's always different seeing it in person. Initially, I wasn't totally sure if it was P. marginalis instead, but the taller crown and anonymous-esque marginal area led me to believe it was the former. P. anonymous A couple weeks later, I ventured out to my second site. This locality had a smaller exposure on timid waters, so I was looking forward to being able to hunt for freshly eroding fossil from the limestone wall. When I first showed up, I was once again greeted with limestone slabs containing Collignoniceras woollgari impressions, however I was struggling to even find a single shark tooth among them. I recalled reading in the past that the Kamp Ranch can be spotty, so the possibility that this locality might be barren was looming in my head as I traversed the creek. Once I reached the exposure, I pulled out the probe and danced my way through the limestone blocks. I skimmed through the whole exposure pretty quickly, but only came out with a few Squalicorax teeth and a big Cretoxyrhina from the gravel. I was a bit disheartened. This was such a nice looking location, how could that be all there was to offer? Cretoxyrhina mantelli in the gravel Desperate to salvage the day, I got down low and searched the under side of the lowest slabs. After dodging a spider, I spotted the outline of a Ptychodus sticking out from a shaley layer cemented to the underside of the limestone. The matrix was soft enough I could dig it out with my fingers. Then I noticed another... and another. This layer was extremely productive and soon I pried off a slab of it to process atop a boulder. I could not believe the number of teeth I was finding. Pristine teeth from just ONE slab Not only were the Ptychodus numerous, they were also diverse. Shawn Hamm in a recent paper listed six species of Ptychodus occurring in the Kamp Ranch. I didn't know it at the time, but after some cleaning, I have EVERY one of those species represented from only a day's worth of hunting! Some of the more special ones included P. mammillaris which was a new species for me. Also, I found an upper medial file tooth of P. marginalis(?) which are always a neat tooth position with their unique proportions. P. decurrens is one I usually don't associate with the Turonian in Texas, but they made it through and I managed to snag a textbook one. Ptychodus mammillaris Upper medial file Ptychodus marginalis(?) Ptychodus decurrens The Lamniformes were also plentiful, though difficult to bust out in one piece. Dallasiella willistoni, a common smaller tooth from the Turonian Huge Cretoxyrhina mantelli One of the coolest finds was not a tooth at all or even from a vertebrate for that matter. The Kamp Ranch is a bit famous its fossil pearls. When I spotted a perfectly spherical curvature from the slab I put in 110% effort to pop it out cleanly and not have it fly away into the flowing water below. It came out in one piece and after looking through the microscope, it has the polygonal structure expected for a Kamp Ranch pearl. Inoceramid Pearl. That rock it came from also had two Ptychodus anonymous and a Cretoxyrhina mantelli as well Towards the end of my slab-splitting, I found an enigmatic fossil. Its flat and a fishy bone look with a bunch of holes on one side. The other side is completely smooth. My best guess is it's from a Plethodid fish, but it looks pretty different from the South Bosque (also Turonian) Plethodid fragments I have in my collection. Possible Plethodid After a long and rewarding day hitting the slabs, I turned around to head for the car. Of course, my eyes were locked on the gravel anything I had missed on the way in. No teeth were to be had, but I did find a thin shale ammonite entirely separate from matrix. I have no idea how it managed to survive in the gravel. It's so delicate and even has the tubercles of the shell intact on both sides. It's obviously not from the limestone, but would this still be Collignoniceras woollgari? It was a great day. I'll be visiting both of these sites again in the future for sure!     A Classic Hunt on the NSR

    I think North Texans will relate when I say that now and then, the urge to take a drive out to the NSR and spend the day hunting some Campanian gravel bars can spontaneously take complete hold. I had one of those moments just after the series of heavy rains and powerful winds our region encountered some days ago. Previously, my luck with weather at the NSR had been rather poor. Each time, the temps were either nearing a hundred degrees or only just above freezing, making a full on adventure crossing muddy waters and crawling atop unshaded gravel beds too much to handle. I had yet to experience a proper adventure at this historic site, so I decided that this week would be the one where I changed that. Luckily, my friends @PaleoPastels(Lari) and Cole where kind enough to invite me out to their special spot along the river. After waking up bright and early, I got in my car and followed the rising sun. After jumping out of our vehicles and exchanging brief greetings, we quickly slid our way down to the shale bed and beelined for the first bar. Cole has a bit of an aversion for water, so he stuck around at the entrance for most of the day while Lari and I got our clothes wet hopping from bar to bar. The weather and water temp were absolutely perfect, and the lack of footprints assured us it would be a productive day. It's not often you beat the crowd to a place as popular as this! Although I maintained measured expectations coming in, the sheer variety of strange and interesting fossils/artifacts that are known to come from this area kept me on my toes from the outset. When we arrived to the first bar, we started off strong, picking up a variety of shark teeth. Lari had an eye for them, immediately spotting a few super big Scapanorhynchus texanus, a staple of the Ozan Formation. Despite my protests, she was very generous in donating a few to me due to my limited NSR collection . Finally one I spotted myself! Scapanorhynchus texanus Scapanorhynchus texanus of the day. Some may be Carcharias samhammeri as I am still working on differentiating the two. In between crawling the gravel, I did some sifting which yielded a few interesting specimens including Squalicorax kaupi, Cretalamna sarcoportheta, Carcharias samhammeri, and a vole tooth which I will ignorantly assume to be Pleistocene in age. Cretalamna sarcoportheta, Squalicroax kaupi, and Carcharias samhammeri Sifting also yielded a plethora of shark vertebrae and I was fortunate enough to come across a beautiful spiral shark coprolite. I found one solitary coral which I assume is Trochocyathus sp. Shark verts, shark coprolite, and Trochocyathus sp. As I scanned the gravel looking to spot a complete Cretalamna, I was instead met with the first mosasaur tooth of the day! It was mostly in tact and showed some nice detail. I was relieved to know the entire trip was already made, and I could spend the rest of my time playing with house money. The only other mosasaur tooth previously in my collection has a beat up crown, so this new specimen certainly complements it. Don't know much about mosasaur genera in the NSR, but I will go with Tylosaurus proriger for now. Throughout the day, we also found tons of very large Enchodus fangs and jaw sections. I'm so used to finding these teeth in their miniature forms as I sift for micros, I almost forgot how big they could get. Lari did good with spotting the Ischyrhiza mira rostral teeth and quickly built up a small collection. She was nice enough to give a large one to me. Top: Fused fish vert and Pachyrhizodus tooth. Bottom: Enchodus jaw section and large fangs. Ischyrhiza mira By now we had hopped a couple of gravel bars and there was still plenty ways to go. It took me longer than it should have, but reaching the third bar finally brought me a large tumbled mosasaur vertebra. Not far from it, there was a section of finer gravel. Used to the routine, I once again got close to the ground and began scanning every pebble. After tossing the millionth shrapnel of shark tooth, I finally locked eyes with the most perfect mosasaur tooth I had ever seen. As I picked it up, I could tell something wasn't right, however. Of course the best side was on full display, but the rest of the tooth was cleaved cleanly off. Oh well, at least it'll look nice in pictures. Not long after, I found a second mosasaur tooth that was decently complete and hooked albeit tiny. Two nicest mosie verts. A slice of an exquisitely preserved mosasaur crown. The next oddball find came awhile later. My initial impression was that it might have been a segment of a Xiphactinus tooth, but the curvature suddenly ended along one of the edges of it. At this sudden end, there were two columns of small protrusions running longitudinally. I was debating on throwing it out, but my history of carelessly tossing neat finds convinced me to play it safe and take it home for identification. I'm glad I did because after the hunt, I immediately googled my hunch and it seems to be correct. This is a fragment of a hybodont spine! I wish I could pin down a more specific ID, but the info on them seems limited. I will say that, out of Moss Creek, I had found a tooth belonging to Lonchidion babulskii last year which could be the culprit. Quite an uncommon find for the NSR! Wondering if any shark experts here might have any ideas @ThePhysicist@Al Dente. Hybodont fin spine. Lonchidion babulskii is a candidate. By the penultimate gravel bar, I thought the best finds had surely been made. All day Lari had been talking about how this was THE spot to find Globidens teeth and how every visit she would find at least one fragment. Well, the walkable land was starting to run out and she expressed how disappointing it would be not to come across one that day. I find Globidens to be really interesting, but I think of it as one of those finds I would never expect to make on any given hunt. For me, not finding one would not define the day as a let down. As I was beginning to form those thoughts into words, I reached down to pick up a circular fragment of a tooth with a peculiar texture. Finding the right angle of light soon revealed the undoubted best find of the day: The top of a Globidens sp. crushing tooth! The whole day I had been hallucinating "finding" Ptychodus teeth. Funnily enough, this may very well be the tooth that ended their supremacy as shell crushers of the WIS. Seems too coincidental that Globidens suddenly appears right around the last occurrence of Ptychodus. I wonder if they directly competed Ptychodus out of existence or if Ptychodus went extinct on its own and mosasaurs simply filled in the niche . I don't think the Globidens of the Ozan Formation has been formally described yet. Globidens sp. Mosasaur teeth of the day! Despite having hunted for over a year in the creeks of Austin, I am surprisingly bad at spotting artifacts. Throughout the span of the day, the both of us had found a few chert flakes, but no sign of anything more even as I was trying to make a conscious effort to spot one. On the same bar as where the Globidens sp. was found, I noticed a worked edge of stone so big even someone as archaeologically blind as me could never miss it. Without an ounce of self control, I yanked it from the sand before I could finish yelling the word "arrowhead"! I seriously need to work on milking the moment . I did a little bit of searching online later and found that the point is likely a Darl or Hoxie. Both put its age in the thousands of years! Darl or Hoxie point. It measures 8.5 cm in length. On the way back, we kept our eyes peeled for anything we may have missed. I was sifting random spots of gravel, but not having the most luck. Lari casually handed me rock with a pearly white exterior and triangular shape. It was the most textbook mastodon I had ever seen, but she wasn't very impressed with it. She told me she had many of these already and that nonmarine fossils didn't interest her. I won't say I understand her terrestrial prejudice, but I will withhold my complaints since it meant I had acquired my first significant chunk of proboscidean . Mastodon enamel, mammoth enamel, and vole tooth. We finally reached Cole at the entrance. In our absence he had wondered off the other way and found a neat spider to pique his entomology interests and pocketed a few fossils. We managed to make it out by the mid afternoon, but I was so exhausted and content, I couldn't bother checking out any other spots along the river. The spoils of the hunt were amazing, but most of all I was happy to finally experience a classic hunt on the NSR as I had seen so many post about before. Doing it with a couple of friends made the adventure even better! Sadly this place has got not much time remaining, so those of you who have stumbled upon this post, maybe take it as a sign to give this historic spot one last go before the opportunity floats away.   17. I have some extra shale pieces I'd like to trade. The shale is from Central Texas, and is cenomanian/turonian. Pliosaur, plesiasaur, mosasaur, and coniasaur is possible but really rare. The most common teeth are shark and fish and assorted bits. I've seen very few invertebrate material. Mainly shell and shell hash. The piece I have for trade has a two nice teeth showing on top, two ptychodus on the sides, a fish vertebra, and some fish teeth showing. There might be a couple more shark teeth and lots of smaller fish teeth inside the rock. Check out my trip reports and you can see more about the material and things I've found. The rock is about 5 inches long, 3 inches wide, and about 1 each thick. The bottom is a very thin layer of hard rock, and the rest is softer, flaky, fossil-filled shale. The material is hard but flaky, sandy, and fairly easy to work with. These pieces are fun to disassemble and search. I have larger pieces with several teeth showing as well. The teeth are usually in really great shape for being 80m to 100m years old. I'd like to trade for something interesting. Vertebrate would be nice, as would anything reptile or amphibian. I'm a new hunter and collector so im open to any trades. I hunt for fun and not for profit so its important to have a trade we can feel good about. On Wednesday, November 30th, I took yet another trip to my micromorph spot in the Graysonites wacoense Zone of the Grayson Marl Formation, Washita Group of north Texas (Lower Cenomanian, ~97mya), laterally equivalent to the Waco Pit in the Del Rio Fm. further south. This time I focused mainly on looking for shark teeth which was a massive success, and I ended up finding a few new species to add to my faunal list for this location as well.   19. Here are just some of my finds from a day spent in the Graysonites wacoense Zone, Grayson Marl Formation, Washita Group of north Texas (Lower Cenomanian, ~97mya) last Sunday, November 13th. This is my second visit to the site, which is equivalent to and faunally almost identical to the Del Rio micromorph exposures of further south, today only present at a couple sites in the DFW area.     Holden Beach Diversity Of Fossils

    Recently got back from a trip on Holden Beach, and just WOW. Words can't describe the uniqueness of being able to find Mosasaur teeth next to Megalodon teeth. The recent Hurricane brought in many new fossils and I had quite good luck. Here are some photos of the trip, I will post a picture showing all of my best finds shortly, but for now enjoy!
