Hey all, I just returned from my first time at Caspersen beach, looking for shark teeth. I found a bunch of stuff, teeth, ray barb, and some other things that are puzzling me. I don’t think they’re just rocks. I know some are fossils, but I’d love someone to give me their input thanks

Hi all, I’m pretty inexperienced and have been starting by going sharks tooth hunting around Venice Beach, FL as it is very accessible for me and always a guaranteed find of at least a few teeth! This is my third or fourth time and we decided to take a whole bucket to sift through on dry ground in good light, and starting setting aside anything that looked interesting in addition to teeth and ray spine fragments. When we found this piece, we all agreed (with no real knowledge to back this up however) that it looked manmade and too unnatural to not be a tool of some sort. As far as texture/material, it appears very similar to the bone/teeth fossils commonly found at Casperson Beach. Any help with identification? It would be greatly appreciated thanks!

We need your help. My husband and I went out to look for shark teeth in the bitter cold and came across this today (December 24th) Can anyone help identify? My limited vet tech knowledge I believe it's a piece of vertebrae. Location- Venice Beach, Florida

Hey everyone! I will keep this one quick, I was doing some shark tooth hunting at Venice beach this past weekend (Caspersen) and found many standard teeth, but one stands out from the rest. Part of me feels like it’s just a rock but it’s had me curious ever since I found it. Things that make me wonder: - Shape of a tooth - very symmetrical - top is darker than bottom Things that make me question: - not smooth like (most) teeth - thicker than most teeth If it is a tooth, it looks thicker / blunter than a shark tooth, maybe a mammal? Although it has the texture more of a rock, I have found shark teeth like this on rare occasions. Any opinions on this object I found would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Any ideas what this bone is? I found it on Casey Key, FL near Venice Beach. Looks modern. Thinking maybe an astragalus or epiphysis of a bone?

I have a modest collection of shark tooth fossils, some of these have been in my possession since I was a child and I can't remember how I got them. I didn't even think much about them until recently. I believe all of them came from Venice beach in Florida. Some I personally found at my last trip to Venice beach around ten years ago, some were given to me by my aunt when I was young, she frequented Venice beach and knew I loved (still do) sharks. It's possible that some of them were purchased from tourist shops along the Florida shore or even aquarium gift shops. I sorted them to the best of my abilities (none at all). My guess is that the majority of them are lemon, sand tiger, and reef sharks. Any insight that more experienced collectors could offer would be greatly appreciated. I think rows A & B are the same species and it's probably sand tiger. I presume rows C, F, and G to be lemon teeth (possible G13 should have been in row D? The longer I look the less sure I am). I guess row D to be some kind of Carcharhinidae. As for row E...I couldn't begin to guess, some of them are broken, I'm sure I have several different types of shark in that row. Thanks for taking a look!

Good evening, I wanted to share some pictures of a fossilized whale vertebra and two Megalodon teeth that my boyfriend found while diving at Venice Beach Florida this past weekend. I have been wanting to go fossil hunting for Megalodon teeth in Florida for many years and I was blown away with his finds. I was also wondering if anyone can point out if there are any Megalodon teeth in the second picture of the various shark teeth I collected. I am hoping that there is a Meg tooth in there thank you so very much for taking the time to read my post. Any thoughts will be greately appreciated. Megalodon the apex predator of the prehistoric ocean Rules! Mina

Greetings - I have had fun with family walking the beach at Casey Key near Venice Beach, Florida. I have been enjoying the conversations here and am hoping you all may have ideas about these finds. I am posting a few overview photos - labelled - and then a few close-ups - I have more photos (larger, too). Most of these are under 6 cm (1.c which looks like a hollowed-out bone is 19 cm.). I believe 1.a ia shark's tooth and 4.c is a stingray plate. Thank you for any assistance... will look forward to your ideas - of them all the one labelled "H" (looks like some sort of claw) and item 3 "some sort of tooth" may be the most interesting? I have three others I would like to post. Noelle

Traveling to Florida to hunt for Shark Teeth/bone, insight on Peace River?
Kroy posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hello I am setting a 4 day trip to Florida with my son to find Shark Teeth and bone mid March. He is a teenager and experienced; we did a Summer trip to Summerville, SC. We hear rains have Florida rivers and streams fairly high right now? We have never hunted for fossils in Florida; but are looking to areas along the Peace River and researched Arcadia may be a good central location? We are thinking of doing: * Day 1 - Excursion with a guide (allows us to familiarize us with the area; dos and don'ts) * Day 2 - Hit Peace River (I have some general ideas of locations, but could use help) * Day 3 - Try some adjacent Rivers (I have some general ideas of locations, but could use help) * Day 4 - Either repeat above if we have success, or try Casperson beach in Venice Any insights/guidance would be fantastic. Thank you! Ken- 14 replies

The plane tickets are purchased and the sifter and 'Florida Snow Shovel' have already arrived in Cape Coral! My in-laws have a place in Cape Coral and the wife and I visit them every year in early March. Last year we went to Venice Beach and I totally got hooked on fossils and sharks teeth. Living in the Pennsylvania, I don't get down to Florida often, but I have been able to make it to Calvert Cliffs twice this winter. While I did find some very small teeth the last time (my first time) at Venice Beach, just south of the pier I am hoping to find some better spots. I am not looking for anyone to reveal any personal sites or honey holes, but I hope some forum member can chime in and and let me know some decent places to look. I know we will for sure be making a family trip to Venice Beach for a day, but I also hope to be able to steal a day on my own for fossil exploration. Any information or tips would be much appreciated. I will get a permit prior to the trip, and the in-laws gracefully took down a sifter and scoop for me when they left a few weeks ago. There is nothing like examining your finds while sipping some Wicked Dolphin Rum and sitting on the canal!

Hello, I was hunting for sharks' teeth around Venice Beach/Caspersen Beach last week, and along with finding a bunch of shark teeth, I found some other fossil-looking stones. I'm not sure what kind of fossils they are, or if they even are fossils, so I'd like some help identifying them! All of them are quite hard and most are fairly shiny. #1: It has a sort of "hole" or concavity in one end which you can see from the second photo. It also has a bit of a crack on the underside, as you can see from the last photo. #2: This one is fairly porous/pockmarked looking, and has grooved lines. The next looks pretty much the same as the previous one, but I thought I would include photos anyway. #3: Pretty much the same as the last one; porous. #4: This next one is very interesting to me; it has quite a few cracks and even has a hole all the way through! #5: I suspect that this one may be just a rock; pretty much the only characteristic that makes me think that it could be a fossil is the color. #6: I'm thinking that this one is probably a normal (albeit strange looking) rock too... #7: This one is a bit pockmarked/porous. If this one actually is a fossil, it seems like it would have to be pretty worn, since I don't really see any definite shape! Sorry, I know that was a TON of photos!! Thanks for the help!

I found this yesterday, November 26, down at Venice Beach, FL near the fishing Pier, along with an assortment of shark's teeth, coral and other interesting things. It looks like a tooth to me but I didn't think it was a shark tooth. Does anyone know what it is from? Thanks in advance! I'll have to post separate posts for different angles; I guess my files are large.

We found this tooth diving off Venice - the captain thought it might be from a carnivore like a direwolf. I thought perhaps it is a tapir tooth - the top looks right but the root is throwing me off. Thoughts?

Great trip with my daughter to Venice Sunday, she did pretty well. She found a good size bone and I'm unsure of what a few are. Thanks for the help in advance!
