Fossilized Plant Identification

Here is a fossilized plant, possibly the fruit of a plant a friend brought by and asked my opinion on its identification.  I was leaning towards a cycad of some sort, but wasn't familiar with it.  Any thoughts here?  He doesn't know where he found it during the past 40 years of collecting, but it would have been in the U.S.A., unless he bought it along the way.  Sorry about no scale - it is about 6 inches in length and about 3 1/2 inches wide.

Thanks for any helpful hints.

Here is a shot of a cycadeoid in the Peabody Museum at Yale for reference.

Thank you for such a high-def photograph.  It permits one to zoom in and really take a good look.
