Is this a fossil?

I found this rock in the Badlands, SD and it looked like it could possibly be a fossil. I don’t have much background in this field so if anybody can provide any insight, that would be greatly appreciated!

I did do the lick test on the rock and my tongue stuck ever so slightly (I think?)

Welcome to the Forum. :)

This looks like it might be  a part of an inoceramid clam maybe ? - the material showing looks shell like.

Welcome to the Fossil Forum!

Your specimen looks like a broken concretion with a part of an inoceramid clam, so yes it is a fossil.  However it is not bone, and so the "lick test" won't tell you anything.  The "lick test" is of pretty dubious validity anyway as a general method for telling bone from rock.

Oh good to know, thank you! Are you able to tell if this is something worth chiseling open? It seems like there are seams along parts of the rock, but again, my knowledge is pretty limited.
