Someone smarter than me

Recommended Posts

Happy Friday! Found this yesterday near the peace river and hoping someone smarter than me can help identify. I've looked online and through all my books but still no luck. Thanks and happy hunting!

Your find seems to be the exact shape of the broken tip of a dugong rib,  which happens to be the the most prevalent fossil bone found in the Peace River.

Agreed. Interesting preservation though as we usually see shiny jet black versions pulled out of the Peace River. I'm guessing this is a land find?

Cheers.

Are you talking about the cracks that run up and down the bone or the shadow of the window screen?

The 1st photo was taken with the sun shining thru screening and thowing shadows on the fossil.

In other photos, parallel lines are created by cracking in the ribs, usually induced by temperature changes.   This type of cracking is unusual but not rare..
