Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire, built in 1701/4. Taken over by The National Trust. Sadly it is a house in decline only remedial work but no restoration has been done and interiors are almost as they were found in 1985 so the decay of the building and its interiors has been halted but not reversed. Before the National Trust's work of the late 1980s everything had remained untouched since the 1880s. It houses a great collection of natural history objects with lots of taxidermy birds. A lot of this collection was sold to pay death duties . The Booth Museum in Brighton purchase the most . The Booth is another favourite place of mine. Hope hope you enjoy my photos and thread. All the best Bobby

Servant’s bells and the tunnel to the house so the help are not seen by the landed gentry coming and going from work.

Thanks for the virtual visit. It's like the antiverse version of Downton Abbey. ;)

People's compulsion for collection is certainly nothing new--but that's no secret to this membership. :)

Cheers.

Funny because they was still using this up to 1985. I think the help would fill the tank with warm water for their morning ablutions. :D

Yes me too. They had other glass cabinets with fossils in but the light was not good enough to take photos with my phone.  Thanks mate if people don’t mind I will add more photos tomorrow of the house.

In addition to the natural history collection, I really liked many of your photographs of the interior.  The lighting and compostion were very cool.  The atmosphere of this old building is cool and the way some things were left as they were.  Unfortunate its so expensive to bring it back.  Thanks for the trip thru time.

Yes we are lucky in the UK . Our friend from Brooklyn comes to the UK once a year just to visit the our stately homes.  It also would be fantastic fun as Adam said to get into the fossil collection and sort it out . Their is some really nice specimens under the mess . Cheers Bobby

I love really old houses packed with memorabilia from a bygone era. It's kind of like a very fresh archaeological site. Love the photos--keep 'em coming.

Cheers.

Ken I really like your descriptions of Calke Abbey . It is an really interesting place and it’s  a testament to an eccentric collector, probably why this thread got good feedback. A couple of more pictures as requested.

Cheers Bobby
