How big do fossil crabs get? Some large Tumidos

Recommended Posts

Having found my biggest crab yet, I was very curious about how big the Tumidocarcinus giganteus gets. It sure lives up to the species name giganteus!

@Dave (POM) Allen has found a massive claw, the biggest I’ve seen. Could be from a huge crab too, but I’ve seen some really massive claws that are way out of proportion with the crab. I’ll have to dig out the photo from my computer when I’m home, but I have an amazing example of this.

The Canterbury museum has the biggest specimen - complete crab I’ve seen

There it is near some normal sized (but still much larger than Washington) crabs.

I didn’t have any measurements on it, but when I visited Al Mannering to do some prep he had a replica and I asked if I could take some photos for reference.

Check it out!

Andrew Fear who is another regular Tumido collector has found this guy

Don’t have any scale on it, but it is impressive!

Love to see any other large examples, or even the other end of the spectrum like @RJB tiny Tim the Tumido

I was there in Christchurch 11 years ago and went there to see this crab.  It was closed due to reconstruction because of the earthquake!!!  Talk about bad timing!   Dang!!!

My largest and smallest Tumido's.  Tiny Tim and Big George.

Sorry you missed out Ron, guess arriving after is better than being there during!

The crab is very impressive in person and it was nice to see a replica. interested to know if they still have the mold. I’d live one too!

How big is your big boy?

The carapace is 20cm

And you can see the end of the ruler at the bottom right (30cm)

wow... was it already 11 years ago you went to NZ?  I remember it like it was only ten years ago.

These are some pretty impressive crabs on this page.  I have some really small ones from France I collected with caterpillar 6 yrs ago.
