Fukuipteryx is the first Early Cretaceous non-ornithothoracine avialan to be described from an Asian locality outside China or Mongolia. Since Fukuipteryx has a pygostyle and is recovered as basal to Jeholornis, it is unclear whether some non-pygostylian birds had a pygostyle.
