Ruger9a Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 (edited) Hello gang.. I have another impulse purchase from a flea market identified as Mesohippus tooth. I have my doubts - you? Edited November 24, 2019 by Ruger9a 4 cm X 8cm
caldigger Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 That is not Mesohippus. Unless the animal only has two teeth per quadrant. It looks to be an Equus very similar to my Pleistocene lower M3. This is a Mesohippus jaw portion. Note with almost the same relative width size as your crown, there are five molars. The early horses were very tiny compared to what we see now. 5
Ruger9a Posted November 25, 2019 Author Posted November 25, 2019 Thanks Caldigger. I did have my doubts, but know very little about horse teeth. The only reason I was wondering is the tooth in the second post is completely different and was listed as Equus.
Harry Pristis Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 The original equus tooth is a left m3, while Caldigger's tooth is a right m3. 3 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Harry Pristis Posted November 26, 2019 Posted November 26, 2019 I think it's an equus left P2. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
