New Members dimovi Posted January 8, 2020 New Members Posted January 8, 2020 What is this thing? It is completely shiny and pearlescent inside as if it was just alive. This is from a creek in Austin TX. Also, any idea what the other small bits are?
JohnJ Posted January 8, 2020 Posted January 8, 2020 It is a modern oyster shell. Some of the flat bits are Inoceramid clam fragments; there is also some matrix bored by marine creatures, serpulid worm fragment, and a small Ilymatogyra oyster. 3 The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ

I found it in a local creek. It looks a bit like this one http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/gallery/image/23581-lopha-marshii-oxfordian-villers-sur-mer-normandy-france/
FossilDAWG Posted January 8, 2020 Posted January 8, 2020 I have found modern oyster shells in unexpected places far from the coast. People will dump shells in various places after shucking oysters. Also old (pre sanitary landfill days) garbage dumps sometimes get eroded by streams. I agree it is a modern oyster. Don 1
