I am assuming that this feature is just geology, but I would like a second opinion on this if possible.  My eyes do wonders at seeing what I want to see instead of what is actually there.  Thank you.  This was found in Douglas County, Missouri, USA in the Roubidoux Formation.  The feature in question measures 84x31mm.  The host rock is 20x12.5cm.  It was found near a seasonal creek bed where gastropods, rugose coral and crinoids have been found.  Numerous trace fossils have been found in the area also.  Thank you for your time and help.

It may have been something at one time, but if it was a fossil, it is long past holding any detail.

Probably just geologic in nature, though.

Basically, if you can't tell it doesn't matter.

Other than to indicate that a closer look in these rocks is in order that is.

Thanks.  I completely understand the concept of "if you can't tell, it doesn't matter".  It makes a lot of sense to me.

If this was a fossil, is there any chance of detail on the side that is still embedded in the rock?

Possibly.  But I don't know how you would be able to get it out of the rock .

I am certain you are correct.  That was my assumption when I picked it up, but I was not certain.

When in doubt grab a bigger hammer. ;)

And if it's something worth pursuing there should be more where that one came from, and probably in better condition.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
