Below is the a paper that provides the details of looking for dinosaurs with a gamma scintillator.

This works for some bones in the Morrison Formation.  Some.

On page 104, the paper states

 

"The method had been successful in locating two

new dinosaurs with skulls in the Cedar Mountain

Formation in central Utah."

 

Although it is not a panacea, it is still a tool worth trying 

in specific circumstances.

yup, can't hurt to try.  

If you have a scintillometer lying around, which are easy enough to find here in Casper, as there was (and still is) a uranium industry here.

Interesting topic.

 

someones doing a PhD on the groundhog system below for detecting fossilised bones. Trouble is the systems aren't small or very easy to carry as the detectors have to detect very small quantities of material buried in the ground.
