New Members PoppyMax Posted February 20, 2020 New Members Posted February 20, 2020 Hello, firstly sorry I dont mean to be rude but have no knowledge of the correct terminology to use. I am in the uk. Found this "stone" on a beach in the south of England some time ago. Just wondered if anyone knew what type of rock it is. It quite dense with a small hole in side that looks almost like quartz, but it's very smooth and almost looks like bubbles inside. It about the size of the palm of your hand. I have more pics but am limited on the upload. Any help much appreciated.
Pterygotus Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 (edited) I think it’s flint or possibly slag. Welcome to the forum . Edit: sorry used the wrong word, not slag. Edited February 20, 2020 by Pterygotus 1
Fossildude19 Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Looks like some sort of geode, with some sort of botryoidal, agatized mineral inside. Not slag, for me. Maybe @TqB will have an idea of what type of rock. 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Tidgy's Dad Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 For me that's limestone with botryoidal chalcedony in the cavity. Maybe. Hello, and a very warm welcome to TFF from Morocco. 6 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
digit Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Yup. Agree with they botryoidal chalcedony assessment. It's a cool looking rock as is with a peek into the interior. Have you looked inside with a flashlight to see how much more you can see? If you are willing to explore more, you may wish to seek out some local rock/mineral/lapidary clubs in your area and see if someone with a nice rock saw would be willing to slice this open for you and polish the surfaces. Might make for a nice display piece. Alternatively, it's a nice piece as is with the mysteries hidden inside. Welcome to the forum! Cheers. -Ken 3
TqB Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I'd say flint with botryoidal chalcedony. 3 Tarquin

Ruger9a Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Hello PoppyMax and welcome. I think your rock looks cool. I don't know how far the botryoidal chalcedony goes back into the nodule but if it is clearly visible to the back - "I" would be tempted to remove the upper half to expose most or all of the chalcedony. It's beautiful, especially in the botryoidal form. It will also tends to bring out the color better. Just my thoughts, I don't know if you have enough experience to remove the upper half while still leaving the chalcedony still in tact. It's a very nice looking, thanks for sharing.
