Becky Benfer
Found in a river area in north central Ohio. Would the little dark areas be fossils possibly?

Herb
sorry, not seeing any fossils there. Rockwood
If you want to stretch the definition of fossil a bit. The dark spots look like they could be an iron sulfur mineral. Sometimes a waste product of anaerobic bacteria.
grandpa
Hi Becky, I've been following your posts and am thinking that you might benefit in pursuit of your interest in fossils from some of the following suggested sites. They are intended to put you on "local" sites known to produce fossils and "local" groups (depending on where in Ohio you live) to hunt with and gain experience from. They are NOT intended to replace your participation in TFF, but rather to augment it. Hope these help. http://geosurvey.ohiodnr.gov/major-topics/fossils-in-ohio http://ohiohistorycentral.org/w/Plant_Fossils http://fallcolor.ohiodnr.gov/fossils http://ncfclub.org/ http://www.drydredgers.org/ http://columbusrockandmineralsociety.org/ http://ohiodnr.gov/news/post/fossil-hunting-in-ohio
