Anything?

Is this possibly a plant fossil or something else? Found in Ohio river, north central area. The small dot like marks on this rock are similar to other marks I’ve found on other rocks in the same area. Just wondering what it could be or how it was formed? Thanks for your help.

I suspect the dots are small pockets of an iron compound that is slightly less resistant to weathering.

So are you saying they were created by erosion? I’m finding several pieces with this same pattern on it (dots) so the iron compound must had been plentiful. Any idea what it might had been? The rock is really heavy so it probably is full of iron, that would make sense. Thanks!

Yea, it just couldn't take the exposure.

As for plentiful ; check out some video of Australian iron mines. Big ! This could be close to the same thing as ore.

Thank you I will look for those videos as you suggested. I found another rock with the same type of dots on it but the rock seems to be made of sandstone - ish material (very unlike the one above). Could the dots had occurred in the same way on this stone as well?

All I can say for sure is that grading from one rock type to another is common.
