Hello - Green River Fish Drawings

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've stumbled onto this site while doing research on doing scientific illustrations of green River fish. I've prepared many specimens over the years, but now want to do accurate illustrations of these fish. The research involves gathering as many fossil images as possible, and then finding living relatives and using them as references. Very time consuming, but for accuracy, one cannot find enough references.

Hello Stan, and Welcome to the Forum. :)

I've taken the liberty of putting your post in the appropriate sub-Forum (Paleo-Recreations) and correcting the orientation of your pictures.

Which, by the way, are really good!

Looking forward to seeing more.

Kind regards,

Welcome Stan. I've tried my hand at a few green river fish too and I've found all those scales quite challenging. I'd be proud of these. Well done!

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

Thanks Mike. I've done many illustrations of trout and warm water fish. These are just thumbnail sketches that are done to get the proper proportions ans shape of a given species, subspecies. Green River fish more challenging because scales, and proportion can get lost. This is WHT I look at dozens of specimens. Color I relate to living relatives or the variety that most resembles it. It does give me ability to use artist license. I'll post finished pieces at some point.

Thanks Mike, these are just preliminary sketches. I've illustrated trout and other freshwater species. The Green River are a challenge, but there are living relatives or similar species to use for color reference. Scientific accuracy is the challenge, and I have to look at multiple examples to get measurements, proportion etc. Scales can be a challenge, bur they follow patterns and counted along the lateral lines. I'll post more images later. I'd be interested in seeing some of your work at some point.

If you want to see some excellent examples of prepped grf fish for reference. Check out @Ptychodus04 fish bonanza post. ( sorry I dont know how to link it) but it’s got examples of dozens and dozens of perfectly prepped specimens
