This is a piece of coral I found in my first pile of dirt. I've tried everything to clean the black stuff off. Even soaked it for a week. Any ideas.

To my eye this looks like a nice cluster of crystals on some minerals, but not a fossil.

I added the back side. This came out of a huge pile of fossils. Most of these piece came out of the same pile. All coral. Are they fossils?

The additional photos make this clearly scleractinian coral. Very nice! The crystal cluster is quite interesting. Some of our Florida folks should be by shortly

Look up Calcite Crystal transformations of large clams from Ruck's Pit in South Central Florida.

 

You have some gorgeous pieces , much different on what is being attached /transformed
