Found odd item in rock from Tennessee (Possible fossil)

Hello,

 I have an unusual item. I cracked a stone, and, in the middle, there is an odd shaped oval type thing. I am hope someone can identify it so I will know if it is a fossil or just an unusual rock. Thank you. The outside of the item is rock like, once cracked the material inside is grainy, but hard.
