Golden Carboniferous Period Ferns

Rockin' Ric

Recommended Posts

St. Clair PA has its white fern fossil impressions on a dark shale. The South has fern fossil impressions that are a golden color on shale. It's a once in a lifetime find and probably will never encounter them again. Sadly, the site they came from is no longer accessible. I thought they were pretty cool finds that consist of the species of Neuropteris, Mariopteris, Pecopteris, and Lyginopteris.

Nice fossil specimens.  I was at St. Claire  one day when  I saw some fern fossils split open that had some of the coolest colors. They were blue, green ,golden yellow, orange and  red .  Very brilliant colors but extremely delicate.

These are from St. Clair and the pyrite preservation has so far held up real nice in my display case. Ric's specimens are also impressive, and I must admit I'm very partial to the Alabama specimens as the best I've seen from this side of the pond.
