Hello! I found this weird probable fin spine and I was wondering if anything was recognizable to anyone. I dont think it is an acanthodian but I am unsure of an ID. It has alot of cartilage.

  • Samurai changed the title to Cartilagenous Fish Fin Spine? (Missouri)

It could be, but unless someone is very familiar with that formation then I doubt it can be IDed.

It is chondrichthyan, but may be difficult to id down further.

Not a fin spine. This is all cartilage, and fin spines are a mix of dental tissues. Could be a piece of a jaw or gill arch. You would need to prepare it or x-ray this to get a better ID than that, though.

Ooo ok thank you. I had never heard of a fin spine with only tesselated cartilage being reported in the shale so that makes sense in retrospect. Ill have to make/aquire better tools for prepping sometime. Thank you!
