ThePhysicist
Hi y'all, Found this crinoid piece, not sure which end it is! It's about 6cm in diameter and Middle/Late Devonian in age, found in western Montana (Jefferson limestone). 7 Forever a student of Nature

Mochaccino
What you have there is a partial crinoid crown in the "starburst" position. Unfortunately almost all of the calyx has been weathered away; if intact it would have been a spectacular specimen. As is, it is the arms and just a bit of tegmen, which is a shame! Jaybot
Still a very nice specimen! Very displayable (if that's a word). 1 3 -Jay “The earth doesn't need new continents, but new men.” ― Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Jeffrey P
An incredible specimen even if it’s missing it’s calyx. Big congratulations and thanks for sharing your success. 1

Good luck, good chance you'll find a stunner of a complete crown if there are promising specimens like this around. ThePhysicist
Found another partial crown this morning - you really need a serendipitous break to find these things. I think it's just a matter of time before I stumble upon a whole one. The site has other neat stuff, bioturbation, lots of hash plates, and a good view. I'm also still hoping for a trilobite. 9 Forever a student of Nature

Very nice, what does the backside of the first piece look like? It's possible the calyx is intact to be prepped out.

It's possible the calyx is intact to be prepped out. Nothing is visible. If the calyx is present, it's entirely encased. I may wait until the end of the hiking season to send out a batch of specimens to be prepped. 1 Forever a student of Nature
