Rita__
Anyone know what these might be? Found on beach in northeast Florida. For #1 - my first thought was maybe a tilly bone? It definitely has some symmetry.. I can almost make out a little face lol. For #2 - I was thinking fish skull plate? Not sure what kind. Thanks in advance! Fossildude19
Your second item does look like a Supraoccipital/Parietal bone. Plantguy
Not sure what #1 is as its really polished/worn down. I can see some vague symmetry but I dont know about a Tilly bone. Maybe? I'm not entirely convinced its actually bone. Maybe a phosphate pebble? softshell turtle carapace frag or gator osteoderm frag even crossed my mind.. 2) I like Tim's ID! Rita__
Thank you, @Plantguy! Here are some tilly bones found in Gainesville while creek hunting! At least I think they are. Thought you might enjoy!
Plantguy
Those are all interesting! #1 looks definitely like something I've seen before. Very cool. The 2nd one showing the circular depressions on both sides makes me wonder how/where it would be positioned. I havent seen enough variation in different fish skeletal anatomy to place that if that is what it is. I wonder if it might be a fragment from something else? Your 3rd example is pretty beat up and certainly oddly shaped enough and seemingly delaminated enough to suggest it might be another odd tilly..What does the other end show? Any internal layering? In an odd way it looks like piece of a horse tooth but I cant confirm. I wonder if Rachel or one of the other UF folks or maybe someone else on the forum would recognize/know with more certainty? Thanks for showing us! Regards, Chris
Rita__
Thank you, Chris!! @Plantguy here are photos of the two ends of #3: I thought tilly for sure but definitely no expert. I don’t see any internal layering. Always enjoy your input!
Shellseeker
I can add little, except to agree with Chris & Tim... Tilly#1 is also somewhat common in the Peace River. On #2 Tilly I thought of a bone that might be a tilly or process off a Baleen whale earbone, but never sure. I saw some "eyes" looking back at me I like Tillys,... Nice finds.
