Nimravis
Today, was the first day of a 2 day trip to the Braceville (Illinois) Shaftmine, sponsored by ESCONI (Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois). There were about 50 participants today and most likely there will be about the same tomorrow. We could not have asked for better weather, at the 9 am start time, the temperature was around 60 and it remained constant throughout the day. The Braceville Shaftmine was active in the late 1800’s and we collect Mazon Creek concretions from this spoil pile. This spoil hill has been collected for many decades and always produces nice concretions. Attached below are pics of the area and the participants, which included many Fossil Forum members. Nimravis
Again, this was a great time. If you live in or near Illinois, you should look at joining ESCONI, so you can attend one of these trips.

Dean L
Thanks for posting the pictures! It was my first time fossil hunting at mazon creek and it was a very good time. I’ve got my nodules soaking for the freeze and thaw process right now. Hopefully there will be some good stuff in them when they open! Have a good day everyone!

Mark Kmiecik
Thanks for the tour, Ralph. Did you grab that one in the first concretion photo? Looks like a good sized shrimp, maybe Belotelsun magister. Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Dean L
I have finally broken open the concretions I found on the trip. Here are some pictures. The only real obvious fossils were the clams which I believe are mazonomya. The first few images of a white object in the rock are interesting to me. Does anyone know if this is a fossil? If so, what is it?
