Found this whilst walking on a local beach, can you help me identify what this is? Thinking petrified wood?

Where is your local beach ? International forum, we need a little more information to be able to determine a stratigraphy and get an idea.

That said, I see mostly pyrite.

How heavy and hard is it? It could be lignite. Wood preserved as a soft coal. It is often found in association with pyrite. The cracks could get much worse if it dries out without being stabilized.
