Alexthefossilfinder Posted October 25 Posted October 25 I bought this trilobite from Ripley's Aquarium Toronto today. It's my first full trilobite so I'm obviously pretty excited, however, I wanted to know how I could tell if it's a fake or not. I haven't found anything that could suggest it's fake but being my first trilobite I've bought I want to make sure. Please comment if there's a specific part I can take pictures of for further detail. 1
Randyw Posted October 25 Posted October 25 It’s looking real to me. Good symmetry, a few chips but no bubbles or anything that might indicate a fake. When I blow up the pictures I think I can even see some of the higher lenses of the eyes. But let’s wait for the experts for an i.d…
TriVeratops Posted October 25 Posted October 25 real. minor restoration along that crack in the middle. UV light would probably show exactly where any repair and restoration are, if you’re curious.
trilobites_are_awesome Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Minor restoration but over all a very nice specimen! Cheers! James My trilobites About me
fossilguy312 Posted November 9 Posted November 9 My opinion, for what it's worth (I'd say a little, not a huge amount :-) ) is that this specimen looks pretty nice with small bits of restoration here and there. Not a bad piece by any means!
Ludwigia Posted November 9 Posted November 9 This looks like a Gerastos sp. from Morocco. They are quite common, so no need to fake them. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted November 10 Posted November 10 @Alexthefossilfinder Are you satisfied with the responses? 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Isotelus2883 Posted November 10 Posted November 10 Not a Gerastos, but a phacopid. I think Moroccops, but a picture of the eye lenses are needed. 1

Kane Posted November 11 Posted November 11 14 minutes ago, Ludwigia said: How can you tell the difference? Gerastos are proetids and tend not to have schizochroal eyes. It would also have a relatively smoother glabella and a cephalic margin. 3 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
