Fossildude19 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 So, Niger. Early Cretaceous. We always need location information to make accurate IDs. Fossildude19 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 This is a different claw from the same place? Fossildude19 Posted October 25 Posted October 25 I cannot help with dinosaur/reptile fossils. Just asking questions that might help someone else. JorisVV Posted October 25 Posted October 25 These claws are very common. Just a reptile claw. That is for sure. Its hard to distinguish the small dino claws from reptile claws from time to time.

Phos_01 Posted October 26 Posted October 26 I think these are not real claws. First one looks more like a subjective rock in my opinion. Second one looks like a cast, and not dinosaur. 1

It won't be profitable to make those small fake ones. So they are claws. 1

FB003 Posted October 29 Posted October 29 It doesn't mean real either. Only one picture. For all we know the inside is hollow with resin bubbles on the other side. I would say more pictures are needed for an accurate determination in either direction. 1 *Frank*
Daze Posted October 29 Posted October 29 These are typical Niger claws and definitely real, as Joris said they are found by the thousands. They are usually sold to dealers in big batches and the ones shown here are way overpriced.

I’ve also seen several claws marketed as real that are clearly replicas or faked. Around here there are more fakes at the show than real ones. There may be few replicas where you are but this is an international forum so my comment still applies for the rest of us where real claws aren’t as available. 1

jpc Posted October 29 Posted October 29 (edited) I know very little about the commercial market for Nigerien dino bones, but I have spent several months on the ground in the Tiouraren Fm. The only claws we saw were associated with an actual skeleton. To call them common is not at all consistent with my actual experience there. On the other hand, they might be common in the gift shops in Agadez, where one can also find 'common' theropod teeth. Common because the locals know that they sell so they pick them up and leave all the chunkosaurs (and other interesting but less commercially valuable fossils) in place. Edited October 30 by jpc 2
