We hope all are well and may be able to help!

We think we may have found a fossil bone and was hoping you someone may be able to help confirm/deny/identify it.

Details below:

Location: Whitby, North Yorkshire. Approximate OS location NZ 87505 12989, in the eroding glacial mud cliffs at the coast.

Date: 30 Oct 2024

Item: suspected fossil see attached pictures

We can provide additional pictures/ information if required. We know there are fossils in the area but we don’t think fossil bone is found very often in the area but it is unlike other rocks (mud stone, flint, limestone etc in the area.)

all help appreciated!

Third possibility - fossil wood.

Has a carbonaceous film/crust on the outer surface.  (Jet?)  The solid inside looks like rock, ...  so maybe a cast of fossil wood branch.

The internal texture reminds me of the way fractures in freshly made charcoal look. Charcoal is geologically stable.

I think this is one to take to a local museum paleo department.  The lack of texture in the center makes the suggestion of cast reasonable and the texture on the outside may be recognized by someone from the area.

Maybe lignite? is it hard or soft? Does it scratch easily?

It’s hard, does not scratch easily.
