Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina interesting discovery

I found this artefact walking on the beach in North Carolina. Wrightsville beach to be exact. My best guess is it appears to be the front portion of one side of a lower mandible/jaw bone. The ridges seem odd to me as well as the sort of fold line on the flatter side of the piece.

Can someone please help me identify this???

Disclaimer: I am not an expert or even a novice at identifying these things. I just happened to come across it and am curious enough to post here.

Looks like a piece of a helmet shell. Image from here.
