Oertijdmuseum Boxtel

Many people here have enjoyed my photo heavy tours of natural history musea I visited in the past.
But to my big shame I have actually never done one for my favorite musea, the Oertijdmuseum in Boxtel (The Netherlands) where I volunteer myself.
So that is something I wanted to change since this museum deserves all the love it can get!

Unfortunately I haven't done an entire photo tour of the museum yet, since when I am there I am mostly doing other stuff but in the coming months I'll try to take pictures of all the displays during the breaks to showcase this amazing museum and I'll be sharing all the important news here as well once it is made public!

 

One of the things I have entirely photographed are the fossils of the Liége/Limburg chalk deposits from the Maastrichtian type locality on the Dutch/Belgian border around the city of Maastricht.

I'll continue this topic with the invertebrates from the Maastrichtian type locality, but I see that the pictures I have are a bit outdated since these were taken before the info cards were added.

I am mainly help in the lab for fossil preparation.

Currenly I mainly work on Solnhofen fish when I am there, and I just started on a block with a pair of Pinna cretacea from Eben Emael which I found myself and donated to the museum.
But I also help with microfossil material, since I live a fair distant away I can't always make it on a regular basis so I regularly get micromaterial from Jonathan to take home to go through for the museum. I am currenly sorting through Lichtenberg material from Maastricht, have around 100 kg to go through under to microscope.

Impressive collection! Some very rare materials here, amongst which a surprising amount of Carinodens belgicus - especially when compared with what I've seen in other museums both in The Netherlands and Brussels...! Definitely worth a visit in that case! Can't believe I haven't been yet, so I'll definitely need to plan a trip!

Yeah, they have a very nice collection of marine reptile specimens from the Maastricht area!

Next up is the newest exhibition, the unknown giants displaying fossils from the Triassic layers of Krasiejow in Poland

 

 

 

The first genuine mounted skeleton of Metoposaurus krasiejowensi in the world

 

 

 

 

 

 

A gorgeous block of Metoposaurus bones as well as rare associated vertebras, this piece now lies in one of the showcases.

Some might also remember this topic from where I went to the Poland on a fieldschool were we also visited and join the Krasiejow excavation.
Gun fact, a lot of the material currently in the exhibition was brought to the Netherlands during this trip as multiple people from the museum in Boxtel were part of the fieldschool.
