New Members AaronJ Posted November 12, 2024 New Members Posted November 12, 2024 Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can ID this fossil. I found it yesterday along with many others like it in one small area of the Sespe Creek in Ventura County, CA.
New Members AaronJ Posted November 28, 2024 Author New Members Posted November 28, 2024 Definitely thought it was an oyster. I’m curious about its age/era/period. Miocene?
Balance Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Good morning, to determine the info you’re after you can use the info below. Find your area, find the coordinating geological age range map , determine the age range via the chart and you can research the specific age range to dial time frame in further. Then just use google to search the info you’ve researched along with “fossil oyster”. As you can see from my example you don’t even need to spell it correctly 😊 So here’s some info to get you started. I’d start by searching the names google gives you and find a photo match. Then cross check the species you picked against that time range chart. If the species was where you found the fossil when they say it should have been there, you gotta match! Welcome and reach out if you need help. Jp Heres the results from Paleogene. Maybe try “neogene fossil oysters of California” if you discover your area is younger and you can match a photo from the Paleogene examples. Make sense? Have fun! I’m going to be cleaning a bucket of Pliocene shell fossils today while I smoke the turkey. So I’ll be googling stuff all afternoon. It’s an addiction. History, unknown, treasure and science projects. Hard to walk away. 😊 Jp 2
