My last time out my fossil hunting friend and I had an encounter with a large gator. We were hunting deeper, murky water.

Fortunately for us, the Alligator decided it was too cold to eat and we dodged a bullet. This encounter will encourage better practices.

Attempting to keep as few secrets from my spouse as possible , I transparently related the incident and thought she took the news very well.

This morning in my texts was this photo.  no comments from her, just this photo.

Be careful out there. The world is a dangerous place.

That is very funny, well done to your wife!  And do be careful out there, but still enjoy!  Good luck.

Cute photo but I'd put down a serious money bet that the photo is not along the Peace. I've heard that there are some pretty populated gator holes along the Myakka (where folks shouldn't be fossil hunting anyway). During a cold snap a few winters back Tammy and I went out to see the wildlife at La Chua Trail on Paines Prairie just south of Gainesville. It was a chilly morning but the sun was out so we figured there would be a nice population of gators drying to warm up. We met a park ranger who was doing a gator count from the end of the trail back to where we met him. I asked him how many he'd counted already and he said he was up in the 800s. The banks looked like they were tiled with gators all tolerating the close proximity as warmth was more important than space at that moment. I think I may have some photos somewhere but it pretty much looked like the photo above.

Be smart. Stay safe. Keep all your appendages. ;)

Cheers.

Absolutely  I agree with Ken.  I have traversed the entire Peace River and that photo is not from the Peace River and maybe not even from the Myakka "Deep Hole".

Did a reverse image search, it's caimans on a river bank in Brazil.

Must be difficult to survive for very long as a fish or crustacean. :ninja:

And I've seen videos of caimans being predated upon by stealthy jaguars--nature red in tooth and claw.

Cheers.
