Hey there everyone! I’m new to the fossil forum and this is my first post! I recently acquired this group of white river badlands jaw fragments and wanted to find the IDs for as many of them as I can. I’m seeing a lot of oreodont in here, but I’m not sure 100% about some of the pieces. Some of them are very small. There could be a few other things mixed in here as well. The bottom middle fossil with the dark teeth is especially intriguing. IMG_8378.thumb.jpeg.469384a514bb42b4b6ff5cfad266260e.jpegIMG_8379.thumb.jpeg.43dabb41c4636aadcba38788f6e73448.jpegIMG_8376.thumb.jpeg.caf3d314254349c118bceeebd62201ba.jpegIMG_8375.thumb.jpeg.23643b54a39765a62c30e205c79829a9.jpegIMG_8374.thumb.jpeg.2d6f6701c02de8ed30b37090122f54d3.jpeg

hiya,and welcome

From these pix (*cough* they could be bigger :P) it might be hard to determine these.

Given that in mammal taxonomy cusps play a large part, a view of the chewing ( "occlusal",to use the vernacular) surface would further the cause

I can feel people pointing the OP in the Scott/Jepsen direction

Edit: the last pic is a step in the right direction

Hi!

In your bottom picture the bottom left and top right are oreodonts... I'm at work and on my phone so I can't mark them....

Hi! Yeah, sorry for the pic quality. These photos are actually directly from the listing I purchased. It was a really good deal, even if they turn out to be mostly Oreodont which is what I believe may be the case. They’re one of my favorite prehistoric critters, so I’m happy! I’ll have to take some more pics close up once I actually receive them, especially of the teeth.

You’re all good and thank you for the IDs! That’s what I’m thinking for the majority of these (and I’m happy because I love Oreodonts). I have a skull from one as well and the teeth seem to match a couple of these perfectly. I’ll have to take pictures of the one with the darker teeth and a few of the smaller pieces I don’t recognize once I receive them.

Oreodonts are the best! Most of what I prep (besides fish) are oreodonts!

always great to have another oreodont enthusiast on the forum! Welcome to the forum!

Very cool! They were some weird, but amazing little animals. I’m sure it’s a blast getting to work with and prep so many of their specimens. And thanks, I appreciate it! :)

My favorite is the little Sespia natida but it seems like I mostly prep culbertsonias

Ah yeah, those little cat sized ones are fascinating. Sespia californica was actually one of the first Oreodont specimens I’d ever seen in person and I’ve loved them ever since.

Ooooo I’m jealous! I havent had a chance to see a californica in person! The natida skull was actually the first mammal skull I ever prepped and it got me fully hooked on prepping.
