Triceratops Nasal Bone Fragment? Lance Creek Bone Fragment ID

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I saw this fossil listed as a Triceratops rostrum nasal bone fragment. According to the description, it was found in the Lance Creek Formation of Wyoming. I have limited knowledge of Triceratops skull morphology, so I can't really tell if it is truly a partial Triceratops nasal bone as described by the dealer or just another random bone fragment. May I hear your opinions on this? Thank you!

I don't know enough to say for sure but it's not impossible.  It does look, to me at least, that it could be a chunk of one based off the exterior structure.  As a note, there is no lance creek. It's Hell Creek or Lance Formation.

Indeed... no such thing as Lance Creek Fm.  It is simply Lance Fm.  If the dealer doesn't know this, well....  I shan't dis anyone too much here.

Anyway, it definitely has a ceratopsian horn look to it.  If I found this I would label it as "likely horn section".  Brow or nasal... can't say.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! According to the dealer, this is a partial nasal bone, likely located near the base of the nasal horn rather than being part of a horn. Do you think it more closely resembles a horn fragment?

Hard to say from just photos.  The nasal bone is not very thick and this seems to be fairly thick.  That is why I am thinking horn chunk.
