Have a look at this one: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-89472-1 Fig 3a shows the crystal structure of eggshell very nicely. Does yours show anything like this? 1

Do you think that it looks similar? I think it has similarities. Those are as close as my phone will take clear pictures
jpc Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 (edited) In the first photo, I see some interesting crystal structure near the bottom of the 'shell', but it seems to be more triangular than perpendicular to the surface. But, yeah, we would really need closer, clearer photos. If you are on the Wastach Front, take it to the museum up on the hill in SLC... University of Utah? I can't remember what the museum is. Bit it is a big museum that does a lot of work in the EGSNM. If you are in southern Utah, try the one on the southern edge ot the GSENM. Again, I can't remember the name.... I do have plans to schedule a meet up with my local Universities on staff paleontologist to hopefully look at it and a couple other pieces. If it's still in question I'll plan a trip up to the saltlake Museum. I'll let you all know as soon as I get a definite answer. Should I put it on here or start a new topic under a different group? 2
FB003 Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 I would keep it here for reference. 1 2 *Frank*

I think so but clearly I'm far from an expert
jpc Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 This link is figure 3 from that paper. Note the internal crystals that are perpendicular to the shell surface and the outer layer which is less crystally and the texture runs parallel to the surface. The crystal structure in yours seems to be more conical.. I am looking particularly along the bottom right edge. Looks kinda like stacked ice cream cones, rather than eggshell structure. 2

I'm afraid I might have damaged the structure that is visible when I cleaned it. Tho I dont want to break its shell to check. The head of SUUs geoscience department has received the pictures and I'm waiting for him to tell me when to bring it to him. I'm really hoping it's not a concretion. It's been a prized possession in my family for three generations and that would be very disappointing hah

I hope the SUU folks get a good look at it in person. Keep us posted either way, please. I am intrigued and would be tickled to be wrong on this one.

AfroRaptor Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 New update. The university professor believes after meeting with him that it's a crocadilian egg. He also gave me the name of a state paleontologist he know personally to be certain.
