AfroRaptor Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 I found this piece up fiddlers canyon last year and after simple cleaning I still have no idea what it is. I've seen nothing else like it in the fossil beds there. Fiddlers canyon is in the south west of Utah USA next to the rocky mnts.
Fossildude19 Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 Oyster shell bit. AfroRaptor Posted November 27, 2024 Author Posted November 27, 2024 But I did the acid test? It bubbled a little but it didint foam like the clay shell fragment I tested. And it's a different color from all the shells I've found including full oysters.
Fossildude19 Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Does not look like bone or tooth to me. Seeing as you find oysters and gastropods in the area, ... makes sense that it is a bit of shell. Some bubble away like crazy and others hardly react, even though they are basically made up of the same substance. This is probably from a different species or even family than the other one you tested or the circumstances of their preservation were different. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Then is there no tests to make certain what it is?

Whether it bubbles a lot or a little is irrelevant. Either way you have calcite or a mineral which dissolves in acid, in this case more than likely calcite, since this is a piece of shell. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance.
