Dylan_bo1 Posted November 28 Posted November 28 Planning a trip this December, is it worth it? Ive seen some beautiful specimens and mounts (The Acrocanthosaurus in Particular) but ive not talked to anyone whose actually been!
fossilus Posted November 28 Posted November 28 I've been there many times. Really excellent exhibits! I would say that it's well worth visiting! Alot to see!
historianmichael Posted November 28 Posted November 28 I concur. Great museum! Follow me on Instagram (@fossil_mike) to check out my personal collection of fossils collected and acquired over more than 15 years of fossil hunting!
GPayton Posted November 28 Posted November 28 I'm from Houston, lived there most of my life, and have been to most of the museums across the country famous for their paleontology collections - believe me when I say the HMNS has got to be in the top three in the US (behind the AMNH and the Field). Definitely go visit if you've got the chance, the Egyptian hall is also incredible!
jpc Posted November 28 Posted November 28 I am completely a fossil person; don't care too much for rocks, but their mineral display is world class and truly impressive.

Oh same, Im not that big of a fan of rocks (other than fossils). I think university Palaeo geology modules have beaten any curiosity i had of rocks out of me XD but ive heard great things about the mineral collection

But it's very good to know a good enough amount of knowledge of sedimentary rocks when it comes to fossils. crinus Posted November 29 Posted November 29 I have to agree that it is worth visiting. I was there about 5 years ago. They have a lot of "impressive", "showy" fossils. Not very much on the common fossils like brachiopods, gastropods, etc. Trilobite exhibit is very nice. Some nice crinoids but no where near the number of trilobites. I did find a lot of mislabled material but that is not unusual for museums. I spent too much of my time with the fossils that I had no time for the rest of the museum. Joe
